Is it common for green peppers to cause a reaction?

Gave my 11mo dd homemade bolognese sauce ysterday lunchtime and I'd put green peppers in it - she's not really eaten them before as she's only recently got teeth. She wolfed quite a lot of sauce down including some peppers. Within half an hour she was screaming with her legs drawn up and her tummy was rock hard. I thought she'd eaten too much too fast and just had stomach ache but it took hours before she was properly better (she slept a lot but was obviously in pain each time she woke). Then she got really really bad nappy rash after lots of farting (no poo). She pooed this morning and her tummy seems a lot better but we've had to leave her without a nappy today while the rash heals (that's been fun!) Has this happened to anybody else? Is the nappy rash connected to the tummy ache? - is she reacting badly to the peppers? Just so I know whether to avoid in the future and whether she'll grow out of it.

Hi WWAJC (great name) - could it be the tomato? I would say there might be a stronger chance than the green peppers (OMG I sound like that cooking programme with Ainsley Harriott,... red tomatoes or green peppers!' ... sorry, I digress.

However, mid rant I just googled green pepper allergy and I was shocked to find there is a possible answer to your question about being intol/allergic to Bell Peppers. had to look at an image of a bell pepper but am guessing it is the ones you used. Try looking here, not sure who she is but it did list the problems as stomach cramps etc. Perhaps google nightshade allergy veggies and see what you get?

It seems that bell peppers are part of the nightshade family which also include tomatoes that very commonly cause a rash or acid tum etc. Perhaps mixing the toms and the green peppers was just too much? Perhaps try them independently of each other?

I get ill after eating green peppers. Bad cramps nausea pain and the runs. The smell of them even makes me feel ill.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a reaction to them as it sounds just like me, although I have never researched allergies to them. I just avoid eating them.

She's had tomato lots of times in sauces and really likes it - never had any problems there. Thanks for the link to bell pepper allergy - not sure it was bad enough to be a full blown allergic reaction - no swelling/sneezing/etc, she didn't even throw up - it was just stomach cramps and nappy rash (although that was bad enough!). Sounds a lot like welshdeb's reaction - must not be uncommon!

My mum's allergic to all peppers and chillis - it's possible to be allergic to anything, I guess. She gets really bad stomach cramps from the tiniest taste, chillies make her wheeze even though she has never been asthmatic (that's what confirmed to us it was an allergy not an intolerance).

I'm not allergic myself but do fine green peppers quite hard to digest - they are unripe red peppers after all. So it may be that it was tummy ache not an allergy. if I were you I'd leave it for a bit (few months) then try a small amount of well-cooked red pepper and see how you go.

Aah! - Didn't know green peppers were unripe red ones (doh!) That makes sense.

Recently I had a Super Supreme pizza from Pizza Hut. I ate a large piece of raw green pepper which I normally do not eat. Within 30 minutes I began getting a severe stomach ache. It got worse in the next 14 hours and nothing (not even Pepto bismol) helped. I just had to wait it out. After about 24 hours, I was able to get some sleep and now 36 hours later, feeling better, although my stomach still feels funny. Guess I have learned to never eat raw green peppers even in a small amount.

Raw green pepper made my throat swell up about 20 years ago. I have avoided it ever since. Cooked properly, it doesn't cause me any problems.

My dd is allergic to peppers! Showed up on her skin prick tests and so she is not allowed to eat them now. She also showed a milder reaction to tomatos which we avoided for some time but have gradually re introduced cooked only now. Also potato- so definately a nightshade thing going on. Kept her eating potatoes in moderation as things were getting a little difficult diet wise with all her other allergies and she seems to cope with those despite the results.
