Allergy to swimming pool chemicals?

has anyone ever heard of an allergic reaction to swimming pool chemicals?

I took Ds swimming this afternoon and he was scratching quite a lot in the pool and when I took him out he was covered in hives.

Anyone have any experience of this?

Was your son using the floats in the pool? My son has had hives before from using the floats in the pool!

swimming aggravates eczema in my dd but never heard of anyone allergic to pool chemicals.

could it have been something he ate before the pool, has he any food allergies you know of? may be something someone else had just been eating or some suncream/perfume/other chemical washed off into the water? did he swallow lots and have a reaction? is he on any meds that may be causing it? There is a lot to consider as possibilities.

You don't say how old he is or whether he has been swimming before/how frequently. I guess you'll have to wait and see if it happens again?

MAybe staff at the pool may be able to answer your original question?

My friend who is a life guard said if enough quantities of chlorine were put in a pool to cause the stinging eyes and itchiness people complain about it would take your skin off (I've seen this on my brother when he was a lifeguard and his feet were skinned). He said that whenever someone complains about the levels he tells them to ask their friend what they just did in the water.

a dermatologist I asked about this (my dd1 used to get terrible eczema which cleared up when I stopped taking her swimming) reckoned it was more likely to be the detergents in the pool, rather than the chlorine (I was hoping that an ozone pool would be "kinder").

she seems to have "grown out of " the eczema anyway now.

He was using floats in the pool.

he is 20 months and we usually go to swimming classes once a week, but this was the first one back after the summer break.

he is allergic to a lot of things. Egg, dairy sesame and others.

I was wondering whether one of the babies had been a bit sick in the pool as they don't bother getitng people out of the pool if it's just a milky sick.

Yes, I was allergic to the chlorine in the pool. I was also allergic to the latex or rubber in the floats (they break down with use too). This was something I suffered through childhood with (earaches, rashes, upper respiratory infections) and there really isn't anything I could do about it. I would consult with your physician.

My swim teacher is allergic to pool water. She has quite a rare allergy to another chemical, but when she has a reaction to that she starts getting allergic reactions to other chemicals and she has to keep away from them until the other reaction has calmed down with steroids

I developed an allergy to swimming pool water about 4 years ago - my legs get unbearably itchy. I don't know if it is chlorine or anthing else.

I am allergic to bleach and when I go swimming the clorine makes me itchy, It was at it;s worst in my teens,

I always ahce to wash loads in the shower afterwards.

I am also allergic to soap.

Well we went to his swimming class this afternoon and he was fine.

We didn't use the new floats this week so it could possibly have been that.
