Pharmacy messed up antihistamine order

Will try to keep this brief!

Recently while on holiday i developed an allergic reaction (hives, eye and mouth swelling, wheezy) to tomatoes :(

Went to GP when home and was prescribed 180mg fexofenadine and a referral to allergy clinic (still waiting on this appt).

My meds were due to run out today (11th), so as per pharmacy/surgery protocol, I requested them last Monday 3rd. Went down to collect yesterday to be told no prescription. Phoned pharmacy today to be told no request exists and to phone Gp. Rung GP to be told that they haven’t received the request (because there’s a problem with the app patients use to request our meds. Receptionist said best she can do is get it signed off by the prescriber on Thursday and to collect on Thursday.

Only thing to note is I fly out on holiday early Friday morning and i’m concerned I won’t get my meds in time as obviously there’s already been issues.

Tried Boots - they don’t do the strength I need OTC and won’t give me them even if I show them my prescription because they say it will still need signed off by a prescriber. Surgery won’t give me an emergency script because “it still needs signed off”.

I’ve got 120mg from Boots - will this do me until Thursday provided I get my meds then, and will this do me on my holiday if I don’t get them? Going to France and slightly concerned re language barrier and the tomato allergy being seen as a preference rather than allergy iyswim?

Any advice from anyone?

Thanks x

Buy a few packs of 120 and take 1.5 tables a day to up your to 180 (assuming that’s the dose you need)

PinkFootstool · 11/11/2025 18:36

I'd just buy the OTC strength and take 1.5 a day. You can get them on Amazon - I have them on monthly automatic ordering.

mynameiscalypso · 11/11/2025 18:38

I used to buy them OTC and just take two.

lidlcheesetwist · 11/11/2025 18:43

Oh my god I am an IDIOT!! Don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to just take 1.5! Thank you so much, everyone! I think I was just so stressed about having a worse reaction while on holiday again (last time reactions got progressively worse), that I just couldn’t think straight! Thank you x x

Yes, I'd definitely buy these plus some old-fashioned Piriton.

Piriton (chlorphenamine maleate) can be taken with fexofenadine. As piriton are fairly likely to cause drowsiness, they wouldn't be my first option, but a back up in addition, especially at night.

Thanks! I have both chlorphenamine and zyrtec in a little pouch that comes everywhere with me so I should be grand :)

I take one am (fex) and one PM. lortidien or cetsrizine.

it’s annoying. I believe You can take you box to a pharmacy and they will give three days supply but I’m not sure if that is true!?

or call 111 and they can do a script

bur for something like that I’d make do with the OTC variant.

food luck
