Hi! So a strange rash has appeared on my 11month olds back, she's been under the weather all week with teething and had a high temp at the start of the week!

typical it's the weekend now so can't just nip to the drs! I will try and attach a photo.

her skin can be quite dry.. not sure if this is the start of eczema?! It just looks so sore and it's red and bumpy and raised

Any advice would be appreciated
thank you!

Oh bless him.... has he had chicken pox? That rash looks a lot like my ds when he started with shingles.

crackfoxy · 01/03/2025 15:01

I'd say shingles too

KatieBee25 · 01/03/2025 20:49

thanks both, so she has had chickenpox when she was 8 weeks old bless her!
just got back from out of hours drs now, they are confused as to what it is! Even though i think it is shingles! They've done a swab and prescribed anti viral medication but as it's only a small patch they think it could be a viral rash? So I'm none the wiser. She does seem under the weather so I'll keep giving her lots of cuddles and calpol/ nurofen xx

If they get chickenpox under 1 year it puts them at greater risk of childhood shingles. My ds had CP at 6 months and shingles at age 3. Was misdiagnosed as eczema to start with.

dementedpixie · 01/03/2025 21:04

I know nurofen is contraindicated for CP so I'd check it's OK to give for shingles

stichguru · 01/03/2025 21:10

Is it just the two red lines? Or is there more? The red lines look like something's dug into her?

There's another small rash on her chest, but it's smaller. It's nothing that's dug into her as it's small raised bumps, the photo doesn't show it clearly x

My ds's shingles extended under his armpit and onto one side of his chest. He still has slight scarring from it.

This is why the drs i saw tonight aren't sure it is shingles as it's such a small area and hasn't really developed anywhere since they first appeared. Did the rash look similar on your ds? X

Shingles only stays on one side of the body. My son had it on shoulder blade under armpit and one side of his chest. It started with a small patch like your ds. It stayed the same for about a week. He wasn't ill, didn't have a temp and it wasn't sore. Then after that it spread and he had a few days of feeling unwell and sore. The rash stayed for about three to four weeks.

KatieBee25 · 02/03/2025 07:16

The rash seems to be getting bigger today. I just wish the a&e drs were more confident that it is shingles. Might go to our local gp tomorrow and we have the viral medication to start today anyway

have posted pics of her rash this morning! X

Had the rash crossed the midline of his body? Or is it all on the same side?

It looks so so much like my son's shingles when it first started...: I would post a pic but only have them from when it was much more advanced and it looks pretty bad so won't post. He was older though.

Maybe it's worth taking him to the gp tomorrow.

going to ring gp in the morning just to see if they'll confirm shingles!
so it starts on her shoulder blade just below and then a few spots on her chest about the nipple area, all on the same side though since this morning it looks even more red and bumpy, like small blisters x

It looks and sounds like shingles. Not much you can do if it is shingles. Treat as chickenpox with the products you use e.g. poxclin, virasoothe, calpol, etc.

The shingles rash can pass on chickenpox through contact with fluid from the blisters but it looks like it can be covered anyway so less of a risk.

Shingles follows the line of a nerve and is localised on one side of the body and that's what your dcs rash looks to be doing. Plenty of tlc and hopefully she gets over it soon.

KatieBee25 · 03/03/2025 13:45

Just an update guys it anyone interested confirmed shingles treating with anti viral medicine and lots of tlc xxx
