Lactulose tummy pains in baby

Hi everyone,

my 11 week old baby is on anti reflux milk as he has been diagnosed with reflux. He has been okay on this his reflux has been better however it makes him constipated.

we have been prescribed lactulose and this has helped him with his bowel movements however he now is inconsolable and screams and is generally very upset. It’s very unlike him and I’m at my wits end.

we’re not going to give him anymore for a few days to see if this improves and just give him lactulose if he’s really backed up.

has anyone else had this issue?

not sure if we should switch to a comfort milk but then we risk his reflux being worse or going back to kendamil and adding a thickener. Ugh it’s just so difficult 😢

Lactulose works by being fermented in the gut so it can cause a lot of wind.

There are other baby laxatives you can speak to the GP about them i.e. paediatric movicol. Works similar to lactulose but without the sugar element so hopefully won't cause as many problems for you. My girl also gets tummy pains with lactulose but it does work

It's not uncommon for lactulose to cause some griping pains I'm afraid.

Maybe consider asking for an alternative?

Thank you everyone! We’ve decided to switch formulas and add carobel in but only a little to see if it keeps reflux at bay but keeps him regular. Can only try 🤞🏻 thank you!
