my ds2 is 10 months old and has had a cold, runny nose, cough, since before christmas. he also poos at least three times a day. otherwise he seems well, is gaining weight and doesn't seem to have tummy pain. he was bf until just before christmas, then took formula for a while which he suddenly completely rejected a few weeks ago. the only milk i could get him to take was normal cows milk. i checked this with HV who said fine as long as he is given vitamins. but could this be a lactose intolerance? feel now that i shouldn't have given up bf.

Could be an intolerance.
Is there alot of mucus? Cows milk intolerance is meant to cause an excess of this.
The problem with an intolerance is that tests will not show anything. You only get any result if there is a full blown allergy.
He is still young enough to try another milk for a short period to see if that makes a difference.
Maybe soya or rice milk.
My dd has soya but she has a dairy allergy.

thanks. yes, there is a lot of mucus. it might be a good idea to try soya for a while and see if it helps. is it okay to put a child this young on a dairy-free diet though?

My dd is 3.5 and she has the tesco long-life soya milk with added calcium and vitamins etc. She is happy with that.
I know some people are a bit unsure of whether to give little ones soya but, after reading a bit about it, I can find no problems.
You could just do it for a month or two and see if there is a difference in your ds health.

Thanks. I spoke to the doctor about this today and she thinks it could be milk intolerance. am going to try an elimination diet for a few weeks and see if things improve. apparently the frequent poos are related to the fact that he is swallowing mucous, which irritates the bowel. any tips for putting a baby this age on an elimination diet (where to find recipes, what is good for dessert, etc)? Will try the soya milk.
