Can you take cetrizine hydrochloride and loratidine on the same day?

Since the hot weather started I've been getting prickly heat. I've been taking loratidine in the morning which relieves the symptoms for a few hours but it's coming back in the evening, would it be safe to take a cetrizine hydrochloride in the evening too? Google hasn't really given me a straight answer, and it doesn't seem important enough to ring the GPs with, does anyone here take more than one antihistamine in a day?

I’m not sure but I do know that a lot of people (in my lupus group, we have issues with sun triggering our lupus and prickly heat) take a very high dose of fexofenadine- 2 or even 3 180mg prescription strength tablets. But obviously you shouldn’t do this without seeking medical advice.

When I asked that at my pharmacy they said that once you have taken one anti histamine you should then treat any breakthrough symptoms topically. For me that is nose spray and eye drops. Is there a cream that is good?

If I get more symptoms I just take another anti-histamine.

When I had chronic urticaria I was taking 4 cetirizine and 3 fexofenadine every day on medical advice.

I can't take fexofenadine, I get horrible side effects with it. I've got aloe Vera gel to relieve the itching but it only lasts so long.

A pharmacist advised me to take both when I had a severe outbreak of hives. I still do this when I need to.

Might be worth asking in a pharmacy if it will give you peace of mind.

I don't think it is advised as they are the same type of antihistamine.

If you can take Piriton (chlorphenamine), you could try this. It can be taken with either cetirizine or loratidine, but as Piriton can cause drowsiness I take it at night, with cetirizine in the morning. Piriton can be used 4x daily, I believe.

You could try Benadryl 8 hour capsules, which is Acrivastine. Not sure what this is safe with, but you can use 3x a day.

I'll see if I can pick some Piriton up in the supermarket later, thanks. Hopefully it will help me sleep better too, these light nights have been awful trying to get back to sleep at 4am when it's like full daylight outside.

Another thing to try is maybe take half of the cetirizine/ loratadine, as they are usually scored. If this is enough to relieve the symptoms, you can take the other half later, then the Piriton in the evening. Make sure it is Piriton (chlorphenamine), as Piriteze is also cetirizine.

I take two cetrizine a day (morning & evening). This was advised by my GP. I had nervously confessed to doing it anyway and was expecting GP to say stop. Instead she said no problem at all if symptoms were bad and to continue.

Only my experience but I've taken 2 antihistamines a day (fexofenadine + loratadine or cetirizine) sometimes 3 (all 3) for many years will no ill effects.

The consultant I see at my hospital allergy clinic is happy for me to continue this indefinitely to manage my symptoms.
