A couple of weeks ago I had stomach cramps and a rumbly stomach, feeling like I was going to faint and sweating and had a normal bowel movement followed by diarrhoea. I then passed what I think was bloody mucus. I went to the GP and they think it was a stomach bug. In the 2 days leading up to this I had eaten salad for lunch both days (lettuce, cucumber, carrot, mayonaise, pasta) and a cheese and tomato pizza and had drunk water and a coffee with milk.

I've since had another flare up of something today. I have had 5 bowel movements today, all moderately sized and normal followed by a loose stool. Before the loose stool I had stomach cramps, sweating and a rumbly stomach and had to rush home as I felt unwell. In the past 2 days I have eaten cheese sandwiches on brown bread, coffee with milk, pasta with peppers, tomatoes, courgette and mushrooms and cheese with a tomato-based pasta sauce.

Everyday I have around 3 bowel movements, but sometimes it can be more. It seems like the quantity that comes out is more than I eat... I'm a healthy weight.

I have just gone thru this almost exactly as you describe it.
It started as 3 days of diarrhoea no vomiting.
I'm vegetarian and could not understand what was going on.
I thought more likely to be food poisoning had I eaten dodgy chicken or prawns, plus as I said no vomiting.

Awful wind, rumbling, pain and going to the loo countless times.
Very often nothing came out but I felt I needed to go.

This carried on for a week, during which I tried buscopan, rehydration salts.
Stopped eating dairy one day, anything yeasty the next.

Cut out anything I could Google to try and help.
It's another week on now and I'm improved.
But have been to docs for stool sample and bloods.
Just in case there's something going on, or even a gluten intolerance.

As I also had blood I'm going to have a colonoscopy within the 2 week time frame.

I'm sure this has been a weird weird bug, but of course it could be any of the things you have mentioned

X

What colour bowel movement?

Read up on bile acid malabsorption too.

Sniffypete · 09/07/2022 18:26

Lactose intolerance? Can happen at any time and not something that lasts forever.

My DD has crohns .. she has been advised to avoid any type of fiber - no fruit / veg skin, white bread, no cereal (basically almost the opposite of a healthy diet) - maybe worth a try.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/07/2022 18:36

It’s probably a bug, lay off the fibre, fruit and veg and also cheese (high fat and diary can be irritating to a battered stomach) until it dies down. White bread and rice, chicken, white fish hamburgers, plain biscuits, apple and grape juice diluted.

If it isn’t right in a week they get them to test your stool for infection and your blood for inflammation. If all that comes back negative it might be IBS

Ask your doctor to check you for Heliobacter Pylori Infection

A normal shade of brown. I'll read up on that, thank you

I've just had two more bouts of diarrhoea (sorry for the TMI). I'm scared there's going to be blood the next time I go as so far this has been the exact same thing that happened before, even the same time of day (early evening).

I'll definitely try and eat a more bland diet in the next few days. I'm vegetarian though so not sure what protein I can have? I'll do some research.

Does anyone know if I can request a stool sample and blood test from my GP receptionist over the phone, or whether I need to have an appointment first?
