Breastfeeding and Reflux anxiety

Feeling like a crazy mummy this evening. My little one is 4.5 months, suffering with painful gas and vomiting since about 4 weeks old. We had a tongue tie revised at 11 weeks which I feel made a huge difference to the amount he spits up, and he has stopped waking up being sick and getting conjested overnight. However he is still incredibly gassy, and it has just got worse and worse since christmas. I think teething is playing a big factor, but I just know deep down there is still something not right.

I decided to go dairy free to see if it helped (my nephew has cmpa so something I was already aware of), but my health visitor made me feel like I was just being an anxious first time mum when I mentioned trying going dairy free, and everyone else is 'worried about me' because I'm stressing about it, to the point where I feel like they all think I'm worrying about nothing. I also feel a huge amount of pressure to stop breastfeeding, firstly because it's been a very stressful journey and I havent coped well at times, but now because I feel like im being selfish wanting to breastfeed when potentially it's my milk making him so uncomfortable.

I'm not sure what my question is other than are there any other mums who have been through similar and what helped?! I dont know what to do next in terms of eliminating from my diet as it's either not dairy or it's something else as well. (Should add I'm waiting for a referral to a dietician, just hate sitting around doing nothing).

Thankyou to anyone who bothers to read through all this Grin

So sorry that your HV isn't being fully supportive. Have you cut out all dairy @Ajsp?

Feedingnightmare · 26/01/2023 10:25

@Ajsp could you update on your progress? Similar situation here and at a loss.

Has your LO been checked for Tongue tie @Ajsp?

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/01/2023 07:55

Sorry meant @Feedingnightmare

Feedingnightmare · 27/01/2023 12:18

@PritiPatelsMaker yes we had it snipped at 6 weeks...no change still unfortunately.

I went through this with my first DS - similar with tongue tie as well. There isn't actually any tests they can do for a dairy allergy so not worth waiting for the dietician. If you want to cut out dairy it can take around 6 weeks to get out of your system so it's very difficult to tell - he might just grow out of it by then. It's worth a try though. It made a huge difference for us and when I did have some dairy a few months later he was screaming in pain the next day and had blood in his nappy so I knew then it was the right thing for him. It's a pain weaning with no dairy though - it was so much easier with my second!

Hi!
Since this post (a year 🤯) it's been a journey!
A couple things ended up being a problem

  1. We were never given any exercises before or after the tongue tie release and he still now has alot of tension in his mouth, which made breastfeeding and weaning a massive challenge even now. I highly recommend looking in @ rockabye_hub on instagram, huge amount of knowledge on tongue ties, reflux and the affect they have on babies.
  2. Only since weaning did we discover he has an egg allergy, and this massively improved things once we stopped giving anything with egg.
Any questions you have just let me know :)
