Query CMPA in 4 month old baby. Severe eczema. Help

Baby is 4 months old and has been on formula since 2 weeks old

He was completely fine up til around week 9/10 and then started to develop eczema.

We've tried various emollients and steroid from the GP and some others off the shelf but nothing seems to work at keeping it st bay.

He has terrible flare ups and tonight his skin is red, inflamed and is weeping. I have no idea what's caused this.

Dr prescribed nutragimen formula but he would not tolerate the taste and I assume other prescription formulas will taste the same.

What do I do from here? How do I rule out an allergy if I can't get my baby to drink a diff milk? How do I manage his symptoms? I'm so worried about his skin getting infected and I loathe to just use steroid cream when I want to find out the underlying cause.

Do I push for a derm referral? Or to see allergy specialist? I'm lost and worried.

I would try the formula again but add vanilla essence to it to see if he will tolerate the taste. Some people add nesquik, but I'd check the labels before you try because it might have changed.

If the GP suspects CMPA you need a referral to the Allergy team rather than dermatology and a Paediatric Dietitian.

Hi, i was wondering how did things for you, was it the formula causing the eczema? I seem to be facing the exact same issues and feeling a bit hopeless at the minute, i’ve spoken to the doctor twice now and voiced my concerns and mentioned about CMPA but she won’t prescribe anything for my baby until he’s seen a paediatrician/allergy specialist god knows what she meant

He normally has flare ups on the forehead and cheeks after a feed and i’m currently trying to keep it under control using steroid cream and emollients

His wind has also come back and mostly affects him at night, did your little one also have this ?

I don’t know what to do anymore :(

Thanks in advance

My DD has CMPA- no eczema but awful wind and constipation. We got nowhere with GP, so paid to see a private paediatrician- best £120 we ever spent. He advised GP to prescribe nutramigen and we have never looked back. Her symptoms resolved within a month.

@Sipperskipper Did u try anything for the wind? I am wondering if infacol will help my ds with the wind if it’s caused by cmpa (not being able to digest the milk well), rather than it being the usual trapped wind after feeds

If you dont mind me asking, did u see a private paed in London? I am trying to find an affordable paed in London and £120 is not bad compared some of the prices i have been give recently!

Sorry for late reply! We did use infacol and I think it helped a bit.

No we saw the paediatrician in Essex (Spire Wellesley Southend). He actually did a video consultation (this was during lockdown) so that might be an option.
