I think my ds is allergic to tomatoes

He used to get a red rash around his mouth after eating fresh tomatoes but nothing else so we stopped giving him raw tomatoes but last Friday he violently threw up after eating spaghetti with tomato sauce and he spent all weekend with a sore throat which made him cough and then throw up.

He seems fine now but I am assuming that the tomato is the culprit.

Does all this sound familiar to any others out there with tomato intolerant children.

He will be 3 in Oct by the way.

I had this tomato allergy for several years in my late teens/early 20s. It was only the red rash around mouth though.
The other symptoms you describe arent familiar to me.

I would consider 2 possibilities: was it a bug? or if you see this again regularly in the future, has he possibly developed a reaction to any other food?

I believe that many children have an intolerance (not an allergy) to raw tomatoes. I personally loathed them when I was a kid, and I'm sure I've read somewhere that you shouldn't 'force' raw tomatoes on youngsters ... unless, of course, they love 'em and there's no reaction.

But a reaction to tomato sauce is a bit different. I would suggest that you leave it out of his diet for a few months, and try to re-introduce at a later age.

I was wondering is there any point in taking him to a dr?

I was guessing they would just tell me to remove it from his diet which was my plan. Plus his symptoms have all gone now.

I had the skin rash and still do get it from tomato puree. Am avoiding it with my DD 11m just incase. First time I got it was from spag bol and my Mum freaked out
The vomiting is unfamiliar to me perhaps it was a coincidence?. Can you get a patch test done? I am not sure if they do them in such young Children I had mine done when I was 7.

Desiderata · 28/08/2007 18:53

I wouldn't bother with the GP. They get a bit inundated with food-related problems and have a tendency to switch off.

As NN mentioned, it is possible he may have had a bug. My son (same age as yours) recently had a severe vomiting spell ... but to be on the safe side, just leave the tomato out of his diet for a while.

I hope everything else is well in the executioner household

Very well thanks except for my need to vent (see May I Vent? thread in Chat)

I'm intollerant to raw tomatoes although for a while I couldn't eat them at all, cooked/raw/powdered etc. I cut them out entirely for about 3 years IIRC then slowly reintroduced. I have found that hte more processed they are, the better.

I get a rash around my lips and the inside of my mouth goes very sore so a sore throat could also be caused by them I suppose.

My dd gets the red rash but only with cherry tomatoes - she is fine and eats tons of normal vine tomatoes no problems.

chloesmumtoo · 29/08/2007 17:09

My dd is allergic to tomato, her teacher noticed her mouth go red! Her allergist done a skin prick test to confirm. It wasnt a bad reaction but enough for them to say only to eat in moderation. Having a very allergic child in other ways of eczema and allergy bumps all the time I obviously have cut it out completely now for a good six months. Anything thats going to trigger her I will rather avoid to save her any discomfort.

Rashes round mouth for toddlers eating tomato isn't usually a true allergy and is quite common. It is often the acid of the tomato combined with the saliva that is irritating the skin.

JudgeJudyAndExecutioner · 30/08/2007 08:17

Yes the rash on my ds wasn't what bothered me it was the throwing up and then the subsequent sore throat that lasted for 3-4 days.

It sounds more like a coincidental bug to me.....
