Barking cough at night - asthma

Dd is 7 and has a loud harsh barking cough at night whenever she has a cold. It sounds exactly like when she had croup as a baby (she had frequent croup until about 4 with stridor etc).

A friend mentioned this can be asthma, but there isn’t any wheezing with it or breathlessness and no problem when exercising (no issues swimming / running etc).

Has anyone got experience of their dc being dx with asthma with this kind of coughing? Did an inhaler reduce the coughing episodes?
