DS1 allergic to house dust mites etc

DS1 aged 14 has just been tested positive for house dust mites, cat, dog and grass. Same as me. House dust mites is off the scale. Any advice? We have pillow protectors, laminate floor, air rooms daily. Do mattress and duvet covers make a difference?

I'm allergic to dustmite and I do think that mattress covers make a difference, especially if you put them through a hot wash every so often.

Poor you (and ds). Ok, firstly you are doing so many thnigs really right already - flooring, airing etc
Make sure there are no soft animals in his bedroom
Hoover his room every day
Wash all bedding at minimum of 60 degrees
Can't think of anymore just yet - will be back when inspiration hits!

Just thought of another - hoover his mattress at least twice a week
All of this sounds like a complete drag (and it is!) but it really does work

Thanks everyone. Have just ordered a mattress cover and a new anti allergy duvet. He has a square pillow which he loves but have not found square anti allergy covers yet.

the covers really help, as well as boil washing bedding.

if allergic to grass dont hang clothes on line.
keep bedroom windows shut esp in summer evenings.

pull back duvet to let it air and dry out during the day. Warmth and humity is heaven for dustmites.

freze the soft toys, or better still reduce to one machine washable favourite and keep the others out of the bedroom.

cant think of anything else at the mo. bet you have already thought of them anyway.

I've just hadf a massive allergic reaction to dust (I was clearing out old toy boxes from top of wardrobes) and A & E said I must have inhaled the dust too and made the reaction worse. Also have eczema too so I guess it stems from that.
Once saw a programme that said that carpets were better that hard floors because, as long as you hoovered regularly, the carpets at least held onto the dust, rather than letting the dust circulate every time you walk on the hard floors. Anyone else heard this?

Didn't think about not hanging washing outside. I love doing that in the summer so will have to have a re-think.
