Has anybody elses GP stopped prescribing Aveeno?

My GP surgery will no longer prescribe Aveeno cream or wash. My Ds had a repeat prescription but recently when the Drs have tried to look it up on their database to represcribe it there has been a message saying that it can no longer be prescribed or something along those lines - app it would be the same for other surgeries in the area (Ealing, London). My local chemist says they are still dispensing it but the Dr still said they cannot prescribe it. I have tried two other creams and bath washes and they are just not as good so i am quite unhappy and it looks from the recent thread as though other mumsnetters are still using Aveeno. Has anybody else had this problem?

Thanks wurly wurly - its just too expensive to buy as the cream doesnt last that long, if it comes down to it I will probably pay for the bath oil though, as that lasts longer. Interesting to see all the products though thanks .

I got a prescription for Aveeno cream the other day from the dr without a problem. She did say before she prescribed it that there was a problem with the distributor and that she wasn't sure whether she could prescribe it to me but when didn't have a problem in the end. Aveeno cream doesn't work for my ds. I have a 100ml tube which is pretty much in tact. Do you want it ?

i use the lotion. it is not much more expensive than the cream but it is a 400ml bottle. if you have to buy it in the future it is worth checking out. my dd's eczema is 'moderate' and it works as good as the cream for her as long as i moisturise her at least 2x daily.

Aveeno cream,Lotion and bath are still available on nhs, I think there has been some confusion with some GPs because it has been removed from a list in the Drug Tariff concerning discounts but is still prescribable . There has been occasional problems actually getting it due to supplier problems from the manufacturers but seems to be available at present. Some items in the range are not and never have been prescribable such as Aveeno baby and aveeno Bar. Try asking your local Pharmacist to check with the PSNC and have a word with your GP if you get problems with scripts. of course sometime GPs are reluctant to prescribe these -borderline Substances - Convince them that it will save the nhs in the long run !!!!

Just to add , Aveeno Baby is not allowed but Aveeno Colloidal Baby IS . This is the sort of distinctions that get computer systems confused if words are missed out or re-arranged .

I just went to order and it wasn't on my repeats !
Surgery said its been stopped and replaced with Aquamax!
Just found out this is available from Poundland for 99p!!
How is this reducing costs?
This is no good for my face , as Aveeno was prescribed by a hospital doctor I assumed I could still have it,but no.

As far as I’m aware a lot of products almost certainly including aveeno that are freely available to buy have been removed from prescription including pain killers, emollients, sun screen etc to save money

I’m not unsympathetic, as a coeliac family we’ve lost prescribed food for 3 people increasing our food bill each month by over £100

The nhs just can’t afford these things

today had a letter to say that Aveeno that I have is being changed to Epimax oatmeal 500grms....it goes onto say "Aveeno is not on the HCCG formulary and therefore not to prescribe it"..... let's hope the Epimax has good as the Aveeno

We've also been told Aveeno no longer available on prescription (Bedfordshire). Quite worried as son's eczema was horrendous as a baby and spent months been fobbed off by GP, often infected and having to use steroid creams which left him with white patches on face. We even had to use oral steroids at times as it was so bad. I was at my wits end, constantly asking GP to refer to dermatologist but told to try other creams first. Complete craziness. In the end a health visitor wrote to my GP to tell them to refer to dermatologist, he introduced Aveeno which really helps keep it under control. He was shocked when I showed him one of the creams we'd been prescribed (Elecon), saying it shouldn't even be used on an adults face let alone a baby.

Am disappointed we can't be prescribed Aveeno but I guess we'll just have to try the other cream. Hopefully it will be as effective. GP said if any problems to come back but think I will try and get an appointment with dermatologist instead if I can. Not confident with my GPs understanding of child skin conditions.

If we don't get anywhere I'll have to cough up and buy the Aveeno myself but it is pricey.

I suspect almost everywhere is going to stop prescribing Aveeno sorry as GPs are limited to prescribing what is on their formulary list.

While this will vary from area to area, practically no area is going to pick Aveeno as it is more expensive than other options so you would have to prove that you absolutely need Aveeno and not the standard option on the formulary.

Even if you see a dermatologist, they will also be limited by what's on the formulary as well but would be able to demonstrate that you had not responded to the standard treatments and had a special need for a particular treatment.

Hi Mum's, its called zeroveen. Oat based & is the same. I have been assured, just now by my gp. It's an emollient version. (so guess can use for washing in too) picking up ffom chemist soon.
I've forever used aveeno (recommended by the excema society.. Did u all know.. Read on both aveeno site & excema society Web site. Interesting reading.

Just discovered AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream. It’s “suitable from birth” and “free from parabens, SLS, fragrance, colour and halogen”.
I bought it online but does say it’s available on prescription.

I’ve suffered with contact dermatitis on my hands for years and the extra hand washing and use of anti-bac wipes etc at work has ruined my hands and started to affect the backs of my daughter’s hands too (she’s never suffered from skin issues before).

Am very impressed with the product so far, having tried all sorts of lotions and potions (and steroid creams) recently it’s the one that has actually made a difference, almost overnight. May not suit everyone but has cleared up my daughter’s skin irritation and is hugely improving mine.

Gp stopped mine ages ago. Apparently it's cosmetic . No thought to the people who cant afford to buy... their excema is likely to get worse and they'll need a dermatology refferal (after trying the 25 chemical laden emollient creams the GP will try and fob them off with).

The amounts of moisturiser people with excema are supposed to use is massive. People will just apply less and get worse results.

I do understand the NHS is cutting costs but this doesn't make sense to me.
