Red cheeks on and off- food allergy?

My 2 year old has often red cheeks, really becoming hot in face and the skin quite dry. As he is healthy and strong I never bothered about checking it out. Recently it got more pronounced, also with colds going on. A friend who is a GP suggested he might be allergic to a certain food. Anybody else experienced this or recognising the symptoms? If so, which foods to cut out? I was thinking of chocolate, he eats that due to the presence of his big brother even though I suspect it is not good for him. Or other reasons all together outside food allergies?
Thanks ladies!
