Teenage daughter with facial eczema :(

Hi everyone,
My 15 year old daughter has not had any eczema since being a toddler but has recently had a really bad flare up on her face, around her eyes and mouth. It's red, inflamed and itchy and sometimes her eyelids look puffy. I'm convinced it's something she's putting on her face as she has none anywhere else on her body and adores make up and beauty products. I've tried to tell her to have a break from lotions, potions and make up, but the worse it looks, the more make up she wears to try and hide it :( it's really starting to upset her now and I just wondered if anyone could recommend some make up brands that are ok with eczema? Thanks x

Ds is only young but he has eczema on his face and nowhere else, and we have found after trying just about everything under the sun that the best thing is to cover it in vaseline. It literally went away within two days.

Has she tried this? She could then put a mineral make up on top, probably.

I sympathise with your daughter, I had facial eczema as a teenager. It would flare up whenever I was stressed or worried. The other time it would flare up would be at this time of the year when everybody started to put central heating on! It's all over my hands at the moment. I never really used makeup so sorry I can't advice you.

Thanks ladies, hadn't thought of Central heating! Thanks for the links to make up too. Think I will be getting some surcare tomorrow for her clothes and bedding but I'm sure it's all the products she likes slathering on! Will try your suggestions, thank you x

I used to get it on my face too,the only thing that shifted it was the body shops aloe Vera range, they had a serum type thing and a cream. Things like Vaseline/Nivea gave me spots in the affected areas :(

It sounds like it's infected, she really needs to go to her GP.

It may be a reaction to make up but ifIit persists she she should ask for a referal to a dermatologist. I had facial eczema at that age and it only cleared after I got stronger steroids from a Consultant.

She was riddled with it as a baby and I remember it being infected, it's not like that at the moment just really irritated. Keen to avoid steroids in any form as experience has taught me they don't help in the long run. But thank anyway for all your hints!

Please carefully supervise the use if steroidal creams in the skin with your DD, they are for short term use only but the temptation can be to use them too much as they work. Long term though they thin the skin and can do a lot of damage. My DP was over-prescribed them as a student when we first met and they did long term damage to his skin that took years and years to recover from. So please read the info inside the prescriptions carefully.

Dd suffers from eczema. I use shampoo shower gels and creams from the websites I. posted.it d took five years to get it under x trip reasonably as all.the lotions and potions from the gp have been shit. I've tried over a dozen different ones.

I will recommend animal.free and chemical. free stuff to anyone. If it doesn't help ir at least doesn't make.it worse.

I had facial eczema as you described (eyes and mouth).
I always thought it was due to products but later realised it was due to stress, certain products made it sore when i had a flare up but definitely did not cause it.
Hydrocortisone worked for a while but then stopped working.
Make sure her GP puts in a referral to a dermatologist. They will test for product allergies and can prescribe other medication.
The dermatologist then prescribed a protopic ointment (tacromilus) and it cleared up in a week!
When the hydrocortisone stopped working I just lived with it for way too long (5 years) and it really affected my self esteem so I would definitely recommend trying to get a specialist to help as soon as possible.

I have not had facial eczema since I stopped taking milk in my tea/coffee. Stress really exacerbated it and steroids did nothing but make scarring worse. I had already excluded milk from cereal etc. as I loathe it but still had it in drinks etc. None since then and it is only looking back that I can see when it stopped....

could it be perioral dermatitis? It's caused by make up and steroids make it worse.

You could try 100% cold pressed Jojoba oil. I recently bought some for my DS, who gets dry itchy skin that bleeds on the insides of his elbows and it's cleared up the dry skin. Jojoba oil is the closest thing to natural skin oil so it's safe to use for most people. The good stuff is quite expensive but worth it I think.
