Reaction to chocolate but not yogurt

My DS is allergic to cows milk but has managed to tolerate a small yogurt each day for a good few weeks now. I took this as a sign that he might be starting to outgrow his allergies.

However, today I gave him some chocolate. Just one of those little squares that you get with the bill in some restaurants. He had most but not all of the square and immediately came up in a rash around his mouth and a few hives. It went after ten minutes or so after I gave him Piriton.

I'm a bit confused as to why it happened though - surely there is more milk in yogurt than chocolate?

Has anybody else experienced a reaction to chocolate?

This screams ige reaction, not intolerance and may point to a nut allergy as vast majority of chocolate has nut traces.
please see your gp and ask for further help with possible nut allergy.

We've already had allergy testing and he's not allergic to nuts just milk, eggs and wheat . I give him various nut butters often too and he's always been ok.

This was milk chocolate with mint. I'm wondering if it could have been the mint? But he is fine with toothpaste, though obviously he doesn't ingest much.

there will be traces of wheat in most chocolate these days due to the new biscuit/fruit/nut types.

what was on the ingredient list?

what medical advice are you getting with reintroducing milk to a milk allergic child? have they set out the amount to give and what type of milk, baked/high heated or in small amounts?

Wheat didn't present any problems before the allergy testing though I have cut it out now.

We had a yogurt food challenge at The Portland Cljnic in London a few months ago which went fine. I have yogurt intermittently after that but daily for the past two to three weeks. I'm supposed to be introducing butter for a week, then if that's ok cooked cheese. We saw a private allergist and an NHS dietitian.

I've no idea what was in the chocolate as it was one of those pre wrapped squares that some restaurants leave on a plate when they bring the bill. DS has had small tastes if Dairy Milk and was fine. I'm thinking if contacting the restaurant and asking if they have a box somewhere with the ingredients on.

I gave up dairy for three months when I was unwell with something else, and when I phased it back in my GP advised me to start with hard cheeses, then yoghurts, then chocolate, then milk. I think the lactose content of yoghurt is quite low.

How about soya? Most chocolates contain soya.

Which shop was it? If its a big chain resturaunt, they'll probably give you the list of ingredients if you email them.

It does seem very unlikely that he can tolerate yoghurt but not some milk in chocolate.

Has he been tested for wheat?

Has he had soya before? Was there any reaction?

He tested negative for soya and has been ok with soya cheese, though he only had a small amount.

I've found similar chocolates online and they don't seem to contain anything except cocoa, cream, milk, sugar and peppermint. So I will assume that the cream or milk caused the reaction. He has been fine with other chocolate but this was the biggest bit he has ever had.

My dd reacts to both types of cocoa powder with a massive eczema flare-up. Carob is fine but any homemade dairy-free "chocolate" anything causes a reaction.
