wheat = ok; waitrose tortillas = not ok? (warning re poo!)

Hi. My 11mo son has allergies to peanut, egg, dairy and soya and I thought I'd finally found a bread product that he could have - Waitrose essential tortilla wraps.

He's had them on and off now for about a month, and for the past 3 weeks his poo has been really awful - consistency of clotted cream, really sticky, tons of it (only one a day but always blasts out and ruins his clothes), smelly enough to make me gag, etc. Doesn't make him uncomfortable at all, and he is just as happy as normal, eating and drinking as normal, no problem with sleep or anything else.

Is it normal for poo to change or does it sound like something in the tortillas is upsetting his tummy? I've checked all the ingredients online and it just a load of vegetable additives, raising agents and preservatives, and the only allergen listed is gluten - but he's been having weetabix and pasta before with no issues.

Hi Gretagrape, my son also has the same allergies as your ds except for soya luckily. Does appear that the tortilla wraps coincide with the new poo! Maybe try giving them a miss for a while and see how he is.
I use a tesco finest wholemeal bread, I'm sure it only contains wheat and gluten but can't check as I have none at the moment. May be worth having a look.

Thanks - I'll check that bread out. Sainsbury's said they couldn't guarantee that ANY of their baked goods are free of nuts which is really crap, but Tesco didn't actually reply to me, so I'll see what they say in store.

We've avoided them for 3 days now and no change, but hopefully things will improve over the next few days - if not then I've no idea what's causing it!

Gretagrape have u thought of getting a bread maker? That way you could make loaves, rolls, pizza etc and know exactly what is in it.....I make a lot for my son and its lovely being independent of shops iykwim :)

Waitrose Italian style ciabatta rolls are highly addictive and the Petit four par baked rolls are dairy and soy free.

All those tortilla wraps seem to have a lot of preservatives in them, could your son be reacting to those too?

I wasn't too happy with the amount of preservatives in them but I was so excited that they didn't have allergens in them that I bought them anyway. Well he hasn't had any now for over two weeks and there's not a whole lot of change - less toxic smell but still not as formed as it used to be. I spoke to his allergy consultant and she said it could be the palm oil and maybe it's too rich as he hasn't had anything with palm oil in it before (to my knowledge), so I'm avoiding that as well now.

I was going to use the breadmaker last week but found that my bread flour had all gone mouldy and I haven't got around to buying some more. I did get some ciabatta rolls though so I'm slicing them to make mini sandwiches - I'll check out the petit four rolls as well.
