Toliet training, bowel issues and allergies - does anyone have any experience?

Warning TMI to do with bowels coming up...!!

Just over six months ago I toliet trained my son. He did well with wees and was dry at night. Poos on the on the otherhand were a nightmare. He very rarely did a complete bowel movement. All day most days it would be smears and nuggets. Sometimes they were very soft other times hard like squash balls. He also had a hard extended stomach and I feared he was constipated despite a high fibre diet. After 5 months of this I returned him to nappies as I was worried about the stress it was putting on his rectum as well as any anxiety it might be causing him. Back in the nappies he has passed complete stools, but also continues to do the nuggets and smears. I was talking to a friend about it recently who mentioned a friend of friend experiencing something similar with her daughter but it was due to a milk intolerance. Before I try toilet training again has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so, how were things improved? DS is now 2yrs 9months.l

It may not have anything to do with an intolerance but I just want to consider everything.

Many thanks!

Hi, possibly worth asking to be referred to a paediatric gastro specialist.

My son has an extreme form of food intolerance called eosinophilic gastrointestional disease, but there are lots of intolerance issues. It may be something really easy to take out of his diet.

Hope you get some answers.

DDs lactose intolerance ended up a bit like this when potty training. (she wasn't dx'd yet) she largely had diarrhea -which was quite oily in texture. Hard poo was only as a result of getting stressed about it all, virtually stopping eating, getting constipation and not pooing for more than a week.

I don't know if that sounds similar to you?

Have you read up on constipation? Because hard round poos and smearing can be symptoms. Does he drink much water?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll be making a dr apt tomorrow.

TeWi, no oily diarrhea and I think he does drink a lot a water, much more than my other DC, but maybe it isn't enough for him?
