I work in a school.

Almost lunchtime today cook announces one child can't have the school meal, she'd have to make him a sandwich. He's dairy free.

It was homemade sausage roll and the reason was that it was brushed with egg. I insisted that it would be fine -eggs don't come from cows. She followed my advice, but she still thinks i was wrong. I'm not am i?

The "decision" was well outside my remit but no one else around and i made an executive decision!

You're definitely right about eggs - Wikipedia: 'A dairy product is food produced from the milk of mammals.' Was the sausage roll pastry dairy-free, do you know?

Yes it was - cook's only issue was the egg wash.

You're right about eggs not being dairy, but I am now feeling worried about this child because the school cook doesn't seem clear about what he can and can't have. I think you should mention this to the head teacher, or whoever is appropriate, and make sure that the cook gets to talk to the child's parents or get some more training on how to provide the right good for him.
