Tonight ds came out in really bad hives........what should I do?

My ds is 4 and suffers from mild exzema. When I say mild I mean not covered in it but we do have to use no soap/bubbles in bath, cream him twice a day and use hydrocortisone/fucibet for flare ups.

Anyway, tonight after his tea he came out in really bad hives. Hot, red lumps particularly bad on his cheeks arms and bottom. They were so hot they were practically purple. He was absolutley fine in his self but it looked awful. I gave him some Piriton and within half an hour it had really reduced.

He also has dark circles under his eyes and is always sniffing and nose rubbing - both classic allergy signs I beleive.

On the positive he is never tired and irratable - he is always a bundle of energy.

Any one with any advice of what to do? I will of course try to get a GP appointment but am aware that allergies are not often taken seriously.

What did he have to eat/drink northerner? Anything different to usual?

Seems very much like an allergic reaction.

The most important thing is to identify what may have caused it, if it just happened after tea it should not be difficult to identify the offender.

For tea he just had ham sandwiches, a petit filous yoghurt and some ice cream.

I'm thinking it might be dairy......

northerner my ds is only 20mths but this is exactly what happens to him when he touches milk and i mean touches it! literally.
docotr didnt take me seriously from when i wanted to stop breastfeeding him and o kinda felt he couldnt take formula..whole other thread

but anyway he hasnt drunk it at all bar his sister cup that he promtly throws away

we went to a naturopath on friday and sheteseted him for allergies and the machine went off the scale at cows milk, and only mildly to cheese.

Just a suggestion, if the food allergy doesn't cometo anything. My DP has been the same all week. He has huge welt like rash that 'travels' around his body, makes his face swell up and really quite scary looking. It moves to his arms, body, legs. I've looked on internet and think it could be urticaria, might be worth looking at? DP went to Drs and he said he could be having a reaction to tree pollen as his medical records show that something triggers it off at the the same time each year. He has been prescribed antihistamines (double the usual dose) and been advised to go back in March next year to get a prescription to take as a preventative. If your DS is having the same rash I really feel sorry for him.

Thanks guys. Lact8 the rash sounds the same but we hadn't been outside so don't think it can be pollen.

hermykne - I do think it is a milk allergy. In his early years he sufferred with glue ear (which I know can be linked to milk) so we put him on goats milk, as he got older he became less interested in his milk so I stopped buying the goats milk. He recently started asking for milk but I noticed it made his exzema worse so we cut it out, but not cheese/yogs etc.

I'm wondering if he's now allergic to anything with milk in.

How did you find the neuropath?

there are lots of allergy tests offered out there but the only ones that are medically reliable are the ones normally arranged at a hospital or an allergy clinic (normally with a consultant in charge).

I've always found this website really helpful in explaining what's what (especially the tests bit)

If you strongly suspect milk, I would cut all dairy products out for a couple of weeks and see if he improves.

If he gets other reaction like this after having dairy I will cut all dairy for some days. But see your GP, dairy is one of those things difficult to remove from the diet without impacting good nutrition.

My son aged 7 is allergic to all dairy produce.. and has an epi-pen. He is allergy tested at Basingstoke hospital every year. If he comes into contact with milk he comes out in hives/urticaria, I gave him a bite of some bread and butter once when he was about 4, he came up in urticaria and was up all night screaming with a belly ache... he wheezed and coughed as well

Dairy is sooooo hard to cut out.. its in some breads... sausages... fishfingers.. oven chips.. packets of ham! biscuits... you name it.. its bloody in it...

like chandra said,... dairy isdifficult to remove from the diet without impacting good nutrition...

do you think he could have hay fever?? or dust allergy

hope you have some luck with your GP..

Well I have hayfever, so he could have I suppose.

Quick update. Took ds to GP who suggessted blood tests. Took him to hospital this morning so should hear back next week.

northener sorry for not answering you sooner
the naturopath i got recommended to me by a friend. shes quite practical.
cost me 110 to have them both tested last week but for peace of mind it was worth it. dd allergic to tomatoes and ds milk.
so he cant have a cheese sauce with dinner and she can
and she cant have tomato based things and he can

what a palaver!
but with the naturoptah her thinking is allergic reactions are only temproary, take them out of the system.then she gave me a homepathic remedy for my son to allow him have milk at a later stage, as she said the poor child will be looking at hte other kids sucking ice creams and he cant have any.

my dd was sensitive to it at the same age,(had her tested then) with hindsight, i wish i had breastfeed her longer, did 6mth and put her on formula and i thinks thats where it all went wrong. but she s not , according to her testing machine, allergic to it anymore. so dd grow out of it over 18mths , hopefuklly he ll do the same.

like to hear what the blood tests say for oyur LO

AT 4 I assume that he has had contact with Dairy before. Is this the first time he has had such a reaction?

DS had a bad reaction when he was 1 to humus. Swollen lips and tongue. Despite this Doc at Hosp really played it down. Luckily I had a friend with Nut allergy so I knew he was talking rubbish. Afraid my GP would know as much as Hosp Doc I wrote a letter explaining what had happened what my fears were for the future and asked for allergy testing. I said some nonsense about writing the letter cos I could not get an Apt and I was worried. It worked I got a referral to a consultant and having been treated by her ever since. Nothing like the written word to scare the life out of people.
