Need a cake suitable for coeliac's disease which everyone else won't gag down

I'm not Gluten Free myself but I have a guest who is coming on Saturday for Thanksgiving and a birthday and I was going to make birthday cake until I remembered... Is there a recipe someone can lead me to which is tried and true? He complains abt MIL's cakes all the time saying they are either stodgy or tasteless.
I was kinda thinking something chocolate. But I'd go with anything (as long as it's not too complicated as the list I have to do is long )

Nigella has a chocolate cake made purely with ground almonds (and olive oil) which is highly spoken of. I do a Victoria Sponge with ground almonds instead of flour which is absolutely fine with whipped cream and raspberries - would you like recipe?

Most cake recipes will work just as well substituting the flour for Dove's Farm gluten free self raising flour, most supermarkets sell it.

Try Coeliac UK's website - or you could take the cheat's way & buy one from a supermarket (their customer services department usually have "free from") sections & lists of suitable products.

The only thing about making your own is that gluten itself gives dough "stretchiness" so products made without can be very dry, crumbly etc

How about an orange and almond cake? I can't post a link because I am on my phone but you will find one if you do a search. Basically you boil an orange in water leave to cool blitz in a food processor add ground almonds eggs and sugar. A moist and tasty favourite in our house.

Try this, my DS had coeliac disease & this is a favourite for birthdays etc:
A gluten free version of carrot cake
275g castor sugar mixed w 225ml sunflower oil. Add 3 eggs, 175g gluten free flour, 1tsp gf baking powder 1.5 tsp ground cinnamon, 0.5 tsp ground cloves, salt, 225g grated carrots, 100g chpped walnuts (replace w dates if preferred). Mix. Cook in one cake tin (w greaseproof paper) at 175C for 70 - 80 minutes. GF cakes rise more than normal cakes so allow space for this in the cake tin. Cool, cover in cream cheese / icing sugar frosting or just drizzle w icing - not much needed. Enjoy.

There is a Chocolate Buckwheat Cake on the Smitten Kitchen website which is delicious and easy to make.

If you get the Doves farm GF SR flour, then you can use it in Nigellas cherry chocolate cake (lush), or any other cake recipe you like. You may need to add a little more liquid than normal, but just judge your own mixture.

I do add a teaspoon of glycerine to my cakes just to ensure they are nice and moist, but with a choc or carrot cake it doesn't matter.

I second dearcathy's orange and almond cake - it is gorgeous and I've made it before for a coeliac friend. It's a Nigella recipe and the one I have uses clementines, so try googling those two terms. Also, you can make chocolate brownies with rice flour in instead of wheat flour. Look for a recipe which has tons of chocolate and little flour in it and then just substitute it.

DD & MiL have coeliac. I often do Nigella's brownies using gluten free flour and nobody ever guesses they are gluten free (just use a tiny bit more liquid).

Pavlova is an easy option.

Tesco gluten free chocolate cake is yummy. My DD is coeliac so whenever it's someone's birthday in the family I buy one of those and everyone enjoys it (I don't even tell people it's gf!).

The brownies are a good idea...I know those will go down... I've never known any brownie eater to be able to avoid even icky ones and drenched in cream or chocolate or ice cream they always disappear. :)

I just replace the flour and baking powder with the Doves Farm one for my coeliac husband and they always turn out great. Don't forget either self raising flour or to buy gluten free baking powder if you add it to plain. I made that mistake once with gingerbread and gave husband a reaction!

As lots of people have said, Doves g-f flour is brilliant and can be substituted in most recipes. It absorbs more liquid than normal flour though, so to avoid the cake being too crumbly, I quite often add a couple of tablespoons of milk to moisten things up a bit.
