If you or your dc is allergic to nuts...

...and someone who had just eaten a handful of nuts - ie they had nut traces on their hands and mouth - touched your skin or kissed you, would you expect to see a skin reaction? Hives etc? Just trying to get my head around something, would really appreciate any answers you can give, thanks in advance

Depends on the severity of the person's allergy. My DH is allergic to nuts but only if he eats them, he's not touch allergic like my DS is to milk (just a kiss on the cheek after eating chocolate is enough to bring him out in hives). Allergies are very individual I think!

If you touched/kissed my DS2 after eating nuts, yes. He would come out in hives and possibly swell up. Only immediately afterwards though. If you ate them earlier in the day, it wouldn't affect him.

He used to be the same with milk, but his touch allergy seems to be lessening.

biggest reaction was total body hives after being hugged by father who had eaten peanuts outside home, washed hands, but traces of peanuts on clothes. Son was about 4 at the time. very painful reaction.

also can happen with enviromental allergies, such as hives when jumping on bed, or crawling under bed from dustmite.

or running under trees , naked at 2, in garden during tree pollen season.

or when 1 sitting car, and vents pointed in direction to blow on one side of body, causing hives on one side, from hay fever reaction in summer.

last year, at 15yrs, watching fireworks, swollen lips, cause, mold.

treatment,
wash skin and give antihistamine. as per doctors advice. esp with regard to full body hives and peanut reaction!

Thanks all. Fortunately, we haven't had a reaction, but we do have ds's annual appt in a couple of weeks, and I'm just trying to get some stuff clear in my head so that I know what questions I want to ask. You've been really helpful, as usual

Agree BB, but I suppose mn can't uphold one rule for everyone else and turn a blind eye to the AC posting. I didn't report, but I did wonder how long it would be before they disappeared. Now if someone were to come along and say 'I work for the AC but I'm not representing them as such, here's my advice...' I wonder if that would be allowed to stand? (Just an idea )

I noticed that too. Don't think it was to do with the name but more the fact that every post contained a link to their website so I guess that was considered to be self promotion. I understand that rules are rules but seems a shame given how great their advice is...

Hello. I'm allergic to tree nuts. I've had minor reactions (hives) after touching nuts - almond handcream. And my lips swelled up after, ahem, kissing my boyfriend when he'd eaten chocolate with nuts in it.

I've only had an anaphylactic reaction after ingesting nuts.
