From what age can you test for animal allergies?

My MIL is severely allergic to dogs (was hospitalised and in a coma from her asthma attack provoked by a dog).

DH is not allergic to dogs but is to cats (his mum had him tested age 7).
I'm allergic to cats and pollen.

So, we think there's a high probability that DS will be allergic to something!

Recently I was asked if DS could go to a playdate at someone's house where there's a dog. I said no until we know what his reaction might be.

If it was just mine and DH's allergies I wouldn't be so worried as it's just unpleasant, but MIL's reaction was life-threatening.

Anyway, DS is 14 months - any idea when we can get him tested?

No sign of asthma in DS yet, but also no exposure to animals...

Our GP said to see an allergy specialist but I'm reluctant to do that as DS gets very worked up when at the Drs' and we already have enough appointments with his reflux/vaccinations etc...

I'd just second babybarrister's reply. DS has tested positive to dogs and has had reactions to a variety of dogs. Not really severe but enough to worry us.

However our in laws got a cockapoo last year (I wasn't happy but they investigated the 'safest' type of dog before they got it ). Happily DS has had no reaction at all and it's been lovely to see him with the dog. It did cause a few rocky moments in our family though...

With DS it seems to relate to the length of hair which is similar to my cat allergy - much worse with long haired cats. I think it might be a case of trial and error for you, just make sure you carry an anti histamine with you.
