Weaning 12 week old from breast to Nutramigen formula

DS2 has been prescribed Nutramigen Lipil for Cows Milk Protein Intolerance and reflux this week. I've been dairy free BF for the last 6 weeks and we saw alot of improvement, until I did a day's dairy challenge to test the diagnosis of CMPI. Now I want to stop BF and get him onto a suitable formula, but concerned about how I do this. My expressing can be very hit and miss (e.g. only just managed 60ml in 30 minutes) so not sure how I am going to wean him oz by oz when I practically need to express each feed until he's taking it.

Has anyone had any success of going cold turkey onto these formulas at this age? Any experiences/tips much appreciated.

Hi Roller

I did this with DS at about the same age. I also couldn't always express enough so in the end just had to give it to him. he did refuse the first couple of times i tried but in the end he was so hungry he had it.

If you've not used it before, try and be calm and 'normal' when you give it to him. It's vile smelling stuff but don't feel bad about giving it. We were advised the same with DD and if they sense that you're not hsppy about it, it can affect them. DS was just falling off the weight chart when i had to admit defeat and stop breast feeding him. he is now 2yrs old and has been on nutramigen since. DD is 4 and she is also still on it. u am st the moment trying to get them onto cows milk but doing it very slowly. Both DD and DS have done really well on Nutramigen so good luck with your DS and I hope it's not too stressful for you both.
Take care.

Good advice from mumat above. Perseverence is probably going to be the key. It can be difficult to get breastfed babies to take any type of formula and Nutramigen is pretty horrid (to us anyway) but just try to keep calm and be patient and they will accept it eventually. It can sometimes be better to get someone else to give it to them otherwise they will smell the breastmilk on you and just want that. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies. We have had some success today with 50/50 mix and he's had bottles of about 100-120mls throughout the day. Not exactly a huge bottle but I guess this will improve with time? Going to increase the ratio tomorrow and hopefully wean him off in next few days.

That's great news Roller. Hope he's doing ok on it. Good luck with the rest of the transition onto nutramigen.
