A plea for cake recipes

DS has a birthday coming up and I am planning to bake his birthday cake then decorate it with vegan buttercream and fondant. Does anyone know of a good egg and dairy free cake recipe that will be suitable for icing? Or a good vegan buttercream recipe for that matter.

I have The PPK cupcake book but found that the cakes get a bit dry after the first day and would ideally like a sturdy cake that stays moist as am planning to bake and ice it a day or two before.

Am fairly new to the world of vegan baking and allergies so lots of Thanks to anyone who can help.

Right, I thought I'd report back on my quest for good milk and egg free cake.

We went for the chocolate cake linked by trixymalixy in the end with chocolate fudge sandwiched in the middle and chocolate buttercream over it. I skipped the fondant as the sugar content was getting a bit ridiculous at that point, also reduced the amount of sugar in the cake by half and increased the cocoa to compensate. 'twas very popular. I used the buttercream recipe from vegan cupcakes take over the world but omitted ths soy milk as I found it made it too runny.

Incidentally Betty Crocker also do a chocolate fudge icing that's egg and milk free and tastes pretty decent.

The carrot cake was yummy but didn't lend itself well to any amount of handling. I also tried a vegan sponge from the vegan society website which used tofu but although the taste was nice the texture was a bit 'sticky'.

We also had the cucumber salad and tofu from mamado's blog. Not a crumb was left!

I've put on three pounds from all this cake eating, and DS thinks the oven is a magical house where cake lives.
