Anyone heard of NZ Dr Rodney Ford www.drrodneyford.com/ ? Found him online and not sure what to make of him.

Yes, my friend was taking her son to him, not sure if she still is... she jokingly refers to him as 'Dr Gluten' but seemed pretty happy with him (with some reservations).

Ah! Would be interesting to know what those reservations are. He seems clued up to a lot of stuff, but he does seem to have a bee in his bonnet about gluten.

I think her reservations were basically that he automatically tended to see gluten as a problem... however, he sent her son for tests which showed he had some kind of irritation in his oesophagus and then he did cut out gluten for a year or two, and improved vastly in terms of food intake and growth (he basically wasn't eating enough and had very little appetite, right from birth pretty much). I know she's very grateful for this as her son was previously diagnosed as failing to thrive and had already been seeing another doctor at the hospital for over a year, without much result.
