Had to use epipen tonight. Feel a bit down.

Title says it all Sad.

It started during dinner, which was all food he'd eaten before. The only thing I can think may have caused it, is that I maybe had egg on my hands & touched his pasta. If that's what it was, it was a huge reaction to what must only have been a trace of egg.

He screamed when we gave him the epipen. Is that normal? Says he never want us to hurt him with it ever again, even although he knows it made him better.

Nothing of use to add, but you poor things! Good to know that he is ok now, and that you're fine using it in an emergency.

I've not had to use an epi-pen yet but if the worst happens I fully expect DS to scream when I do it! It's bound to hurt a bit.

Is he ok now?

Yes, he's ok now thanks. We're both just a bit quiet. At least we know how to use it now. Poor wee lamb.

Oh your poor DS and poor you!! I think it must hurt having a needle plunged into your thigh!!

Not something I want to repeat anytime soon! He's full of beans now though, unlike me. Going to try & get him to sleep (some chance).

How scary for you, but you sound like you reacted calmly. Poor boy.
Have you been told by your GP/allergist than the standard course of action when you have used an Epipen is to call for an ambulance? The adrenaline is quickly broken down & absorbed by the body and there is a strong chance that after 15mins the anaphylactic reaction will escalate once more. Often the usual treatment is for steroids to be administered at hospital and sometimes iv antihistamines. There have also been cases of a delayed/rebound reaction if the allergen has been ingested. I would either go to A&E or keep him under your close observation tonight.

you did very well, you recognised that you needed to use the epi pen, and did. this is a very good lesson for your child. i am sure he felt better quickly afterwards, and this will help him in the future.

Thanks, yes we did phone an ambulanceand they took us to hospital. He had another reaction, but only a small one. I'm just a bit worried by how scared he is of the epipen Sad

well done you - it's a miserable thing to have to do! And yes I reckon screaming is par for the course. I suspect it hurts and I'm normally pretty anxious by the time I have to use my son's so I suspect nerves are high all 'round by the time we plunge!
I can't really see how my son will ever be able to apply it to himself mind! Wink
