Ok, this is in relation to me, not DS.

I am allergic to the cold. Its something I've had since I was a child, and its only since DS had his allergy issues that I've realised its a real allergy not some figment of my imagination.

Recently its been getting worse and worse. I come up in hives in the slightest breeze, even if its 80 degrees outside. I can't cope with air conditioning anywhere. Everyone thinks I'm nuts. I had previously noticed problems in my mouth if I ate an ice lolly, so have stopped eating them. I am waiting for an appointment with an allergist.

Tonight, I ate a strawberry cornetto - yes, as in the name, my favourite ice cream and I eat it all the time. When I got to the end, I felt my lips tingling. Then my tongue started too, and I looked and could see my lips swelling. So I went to get some piriton from the kitchen, by the time I took the bottle out of the cupboard, I couldn't really swallow because my whole mouth was numb.

I took the piriton and its better although not normal now, but it was really fucking scary. I am still shaking.

I know I can stop eating ice cream, but I am worried that this thing is just getting worse and worse and worse. What about drinking cold drinks? Where will it stop?

I think my appointment is due to be in September sometime (drs receptionist was a bit useless but I will definitely chase on Monday now).

I don't expect answers tonight but if one of you who is experienced on allergies could give me some reassurance at some point I would really appreciate it. Sad

are you sure it was the cold and not some ingredient in the ice lollies and cornetto?

That sounds quite scary strawberry cornetto.

I have an allergy to the cold, but it's only ever manifested as hives. It also seems to be hormone related; was worse when I was pregnant. I wonder if this is a reaction to something in the lolly/icecream rather than the cold.

I am almost certain its the cold. I do have my period at the moment, so I wonder if its worse because of that. It has also become far more severe since I had my DS.

My mouth still feels really funny and I'm really scared. DH thinks I am catastrophising - probably true but it was really scary.

i am sure it was really frightening for you. i guess until you have seen the allergy specialist you will need to take good care not to have cold things or let your body get cold.

So, I name changed - can't be strawberrycornetto anymore when I can't eat them. Sticking to warm things and I will be chasing up the appointment on Monday. It has taken me all weekend to get over it, it was so horrible. Not being able to swallow and wondering if it was going to keep getting worse was just horrible.

Did you say you eat them all the time?

It would be odd suddenly to develop an allergy to something you eat all the time...I would have thought there would be more of a gradual build up, not sudden full on mouth swelling.

I don't think it is a physiological possibility for your body to produce masses of histamine suddenly, due to a drop in temperature but it might be worth looking up.

As others have said I would consider the ingredients first, in any case.

I used to think I was allergic to apples. We can be bonkers together. (I wasn't, I just ate 15 a day)

Flighttattendant · 22/08/2010 18:14

Oh yes I see you can
