MN

I was sat in A&E after a three-day bender, with a head injury, waiting for a CT scan with absolutely no idea how I’d done it (I still don’t).

I was never a daily drinker, but once I had that first drink, I had no idea where it would end. I’d go on a bender, feel absolutely shit for a couple of weeks, then get that high of telling myself I wasn’t going to drink again for a few months until the whole process started again. Rinse and repeat.

I haven’t had a drink since that day a whole year ago.

Since then, I’ve been away with friends for the weekend, been abroad on holiday, had nights out. All the things I’d spent 30+ years thinking I couldn’t do without alcohol and the dutch courage it gave me.

My anxiety has almost disappeared. The imposter syndrome I’ve always had at work has gone too.

Life is steadier now. There aren’t the huge highs and lows anymore, but the impact that has had on my mental health has been amazing. I am now addicted to sugar but I’ll tackle that issue next year 😊

I don’t think I’ll ever drink again now. I genuinely can’t imagine going back to how I was.

For anyone else trying to quit, it took me a lot of attempts to get here, so if you’re struggling, please keep trying.

Congratulations @benny77 !
I’m similar - not a daily drinker but tendency to go on benders and experience memory loss/blackouts, hurting myself etc. Stop for a few months, think I’m “cured” and next time it will be different but of course it never is.

2 weeks AF tomorrow and feeling great. But……I know this won’t last, the pink cloud will dissipate and I’ll want to just “drink normally”.

Got a trip coming up soon and am part looking forward to it and part dreading it as I know everyone will be drinking, starting at the airport, and getting tipsy/drunk. It was booked and paid for ages ago and not going is not an option for various reasons. I’m focussing on how good it will feel to wake up hangover free and treat it more like a health retreat than a boozy long weekend. So lots of long walks, water/smoothies, nice/healthy food etc. I’ve also told DH that I’ll be going back to the villa after dinner to read and go to bed (before everyone gets back well oiled) but I want him to stay out and not come back with me. If he does that, I’ll feel guilty and force myself to stay out and feel shit.

It won’t be easy but I’m determined to do it. Really hoping I’ll be like you, posting about being a year AF!

Thank you. It’s so strange how your mind can forget about the horrors so quickly.

It’s not been easy at times and there have been occasions where I’ve felt like I was missing out. But for some reason I can now play it forward and see how things are likely to end up if I drink which I was never able to do before (it was maybe the head injury!)

2 weeks is a good start. Good luck with your trip, walks, nice alco free drinks and food sounds like a good plan!

Amazing OP, well done to you. I’m almost 3 years sober after drinking similarly to you. Keep going, it keeps getting better and easier!

Congratulations! My story mirrors yours, a year and two weeks ago I stopped - I caused a close friend harm due to being drunk and I can’t remember it (she’s OK and has forgiven me).

And I agree - I’m confident, anxiety gone, I feel I know who I am and I’m even tempered, clever and helpful. I LOVE not losing a single day to hangover and ever being worried about what I’ve done the night before. I’ve picked up so many new hobbies too and lost 22kg. Even managed a 5 day hen do abroad completely sober.

But yes I have been baking cakes to have at the weekends 😂

Long may we only eat sugar 🍰 nobody ever got in trouble for having a slice of cake.
