I have finally admitted it.

I used to drink a glass of wine, then 2 glasses, then a bottle, then onto a second bottle every evening.

I then stopped for a few days here and there, a week here and there.

Then I'd persuade myself I could have a glass or 2 ... no problem. Then before I knew it, I'd buy a bottle or 2, but persuade myself I don't have a problem because I can stop for a few days / weeks.

But I will never stop once I have that first drink.

So I need to never have that first drink. I need to control that first drink.... just no.

My first ever AA meeting is today.

Wish me luck.

If anyone has some helpful advice, I would appreciate it x

Good luck!

Amazing, honest, of you to have got to this point.
DM went her first AA meeting nearly 50 years ago. At one time she went every day. Now, at least once a week.
She had her “first 24 hours” medal framed on her wall. She hasn’t touched alcohol since 1977.

Please come back and tell us how you get on. You own this, you’ve got this.

Autumnbeaches · 07/10/2026 11:00

Supporting you all the way OP, go for it! From what I hear (sober AA members in my life and I am SO FUCKING PROUD OF THEM!) the meetings are often great craic! (Very sad also too at times but apparently the ones who were a laugh in the bar are still very funny, but wiser, in meetings).

Wishing you every bit of good luck and success in this exciting new adventure of sobriety.

Can't read and run...WELL DONE on taking the first step. One day at a time! x

FusionChefGeoff · 07/10/2026 18:38

If you don’t get on with that meeting, please find another one until you find one that you like.

Get lots of phone numbers and use them. Speak to other women.

Good luck. I’m still trying to reach the point where I can ask for help. I hope it’s sooner rather than later

WhatDaHell · 08/10/2026 06:52

Amazing!! Well done! There's an app I found really useful called Sober Sidekick, a really good community on there and access to 24/7 meetings you can dial into anonymously or not 🙂

HelloSkeletonFace3 · 09/10/2026 10:02

I see you. You're not alone. Good luck, you have got this!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/10/2026 09:07

I hope you’re ok @JojoButBetter

Thanks everyone for the supportive messages. I have logged into 5 different on-line meetings so far. One I really like, I have logged into daily.

I wasn't sure about the religious element, but actually its been comforting.

Amazing to hear stories of others, which I resonate to. I am in awe of some of those members.

Early days, but I do feel positive about this step.

@JojoButBetter well done on these first steps. Im coming to this conclusion myself, or have been recently. Im so ashamed of myself. But. Day 3 with no wine. Theres other alcohol in the house but I have no inclination to drink it, its "just" wine. Same as you, once I start im finishing the bottle.

Good luck

Usou · 11/10/2026 23:38

Well done @JojoButBetter

Online meetings are better than nothing, but face-to-face meetings are far better.

AA is not religious, but many feel it is a spiritual programme and you may hear people mention a higher power. It is purposefully vague in order to accommodate a wide range of beliefs or none at all.

Enjoy the journey. If you stick with it your life will one day be better than anything you could have imagined.

Don't give up before the miracle happens.

Usou- 32 years sober.

Just wanted to say well done for getting this far. I know it feels like a very short step in a long journey, but it is by far the biggest of all the steps you will take.

@JojoButBetter how are you doing?

I have felt rotten this week, and my sleep is crap - I always "sleep through" after wine but Im up several times a night without. Who knew??
