Deep breath,
I need help.
I’m a mother of 2 children, and am trying with all my might to quit alcohol.
I have fallen into the habit of a glass of wine during bedtime. Something that helps me “relax”. “It’s my rewards”, “I deserve it”, “im
BORING without it”.
The truth is, I want freedom. To wake up in the morning to pure gratitude. To be fresh headed and have a coffee alone in the morning instead of hanging. But I’m a mum of 2 children under 4, I work full time, do 24 hour night overtime (as contracted). I get to the end of my day, and need a glass of wine to transition into parenthood. To be a better mum. I know long term it’s doing the opposite but I need something to make me excited, happy and calm.
I want to live a sober life, I don’t want to go to a local group or AA, I’m holding a secret and I just need someone in a similar, corporate job, with young children, equally feeling burnt out, but doing everything to survive to help me be the best mum and wife. To love myself, enjoy the minutes and not count down and ruminate to every single potential wine drinking moment…. Because I sure as hell would
accept it.

One glass of wine? I think you are being a bit dramatic.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 11/09/2026 22:32

One glass of wine is OK? Unless it isn't for you?

Bootsand · 11/09/2026 22:33

This post is a good step in the right direction. You can do this.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 11/09/2026 22:34

Is it only one glass? Or are you being economical with the truth there?
Start by cutting out one night and gradually work down from there.

Good luck.

I got fed up of having wine most days so switched to Trip drinks most of the time.

SwimmingFree · 11/09/2026 22:38

I was similarly to you, it felt like a bit of a habit if got into. I’ve now not had a drink for over 5 years. I read the book “Quit like a woman” and it transformed the way I thought about drinking. I didn’t at the time think I’d give up forever but once I stopped I realised how much better life is without it. There’s lots of other books similar; the unexpected joy of being sober is another good one. They helped inspire me. I too have a full time busy job and am
a mum and I find things do much easier to cope with now I no longer drink alcohol. I’ll never go back, even a glass a night was impacting my life negatively. Good luck

Hi! Just to say I completely understand. I was you 10 years ago. 6.5 years completely sober. To the previous posters: if op feels one glass every night is not ideal for her and makes her feel miserable why question her? Calling it dramatic is very unkind.
op, having such small children AND work is really, really hard. It’s the hardest thing I’ve done for sure. Good news is you can do it - it took me many many attempts but it finally stuck. Sending you big hugs.

I think PPs are being a bit harsh. If you feel like you really need a glass of wine every day to get through the day then it’s a problem. It’s probably not just this week, but probably a lot longer?

Well done for starting this thread.

Forgot to say I didn’t do AA, but I read blogs of people in similar situations- there are A LOT of us , you’d be surprised. Someone might look completely fine yet really struggle behind close doors. Sober recovery forums were a big help, too.

JollyHostess101 · 11/09/2026 22:45

Smart Recovery online sessions were good for me also the unexpected joy of being sober and other quit lit!

Hi lovely. I was you about 20years ago. I am now ok ,but a glass of wine every evening became 2-3 . Husband ignored and I eventually worked it out for myself that I was getting dependent.
Am not sure how I fixed the problem but I definitely remember that eating carbs blocked my desire to drink.Xx
