Need a lager substitute

First time posting, so please bear with me.
over the last year my drinking has really increased… to the point I’m now drinking pretty much every night.
I couldn’t tell you the last time I got drunk as I don’t enjoy the feeling of loss of control. I am just drinking weak lager, a few each night.
the problem is that I like the taste, so I need something to substitute it with. It’s almost like I need a savoury drink, but I don’t know what.
I don’t want to switch to alcohol free lager as it’s much more expensive, plus it doesn’t help with the weight I’m gaining as well.
what have people substituted with on an evening… just while kids have gone to bed and you’re chilling in front of the tv?

Kombucha

Iguanothankyoudon · 29/12/2025 08:55

Fresh lime squeezed into soda water with lots of ice works for me. Cold and fizzy, healthy and cheap! Lime cordial is good in soda water too. Also like a tomato juice these days, Big Tom is good if you like spicy. Not everyone’s cup of tea though.

mindutopia · 29/12/2025 21:39

Alcohol free lager is definitely cheaper than the alcohol version (unless you were drinking something really quite cheap!). For example, AF Stella (which Dh tells me is one of the best AF lagers, I’m not a huge beer drinker myself) is currently £3 for a 4 pack of bottles at Tesco.

Anyway, if you really don’t want that, kombucha or a tonic with nice garnishes or something extra. I like the Martini Floreale, which is like an alcohol free aperitif, or Botivo.

I also drink a lot of herbal tea. Tea pigs peppermint is my standard, but there is a whole range of Yogi Teas which are delicious.

AF lager isn’t more expensive?! Lucky Saint is fab.

Mossstitch · 29/12/2025 23:26

Becks blue is often on offer, i recently paid £8.50 for a box of 15 for my son, that's cheaper than real lager and lower in calories! I have the odd one if really thirsty and I can't tell the difference. I do understand what you mean by 'a savoury drink' I'm not keen on water but don't always want a sweet/fruity drink🤷

Sexentric · 30/12/2025 09:31

Tonic water?

Ineffable23 · 30/12/2025 09:37

Tonic and angostura bitters?

Rooibos tea maybe?

I think someone does a ginger cordial which I don't like but I know a lot of people who do like it - it will be either Belvoir or Bottlegreen.

Coffeeishot · 30/12/2025 09:37

Ginger beer, has the fizz and a bit of a kick,

MrsStickMan · 30/12/2025 09:39

Fever Tree do a Mexican lime soda which is delicious.

Have you considered something truly savoury like a Cup A Soup or a mug of Bisto?!

“I don’t want to switch to alcohol free lager as it’s much more expensive, plus it doesn’t help with the weight I’m gaining as well.”

It’s usually cheaper. Also, as the highly calorific alcohol has been removed, alcohol-free lager usually has fewer calories. I quite like the alcohol-free Estrella Damm for a midweek tipple.

MCF86 · 30/12/2025 10:01

I completely get you with the "savoury drink" thing. I used to hate driving to things because theres only so much coke or fruit juice I can drink!
I don't have an answer for you though. AF lager is much lower in calories and much cheaper than its alcoholic equivalent so I do tend to stick to that, nothing else I've tried has ticked the boxes yet.

BMW6 · 30/12/2025 22:20

AF Perroni lager is absolutely delicious.

morden123 · 01/01/2026 23:23

My husband has been alcohol free for 18 months and has Erdinger lager which he gets from Sainsburys. He tried lots of different ones to start with but he likes this one.

TheNextStationIs · 01/01/2026 23:28

Bitburger Drive (lager) and Erdinger 0% (wheat beer) are both excellent. The Germans know what they are doing with beer, and that includes the alcohol free stuff.

I really like the Corona Cero. Get a wedge of lime in it too. I prefer it to alcoholic beers now and it’s only 55 calories per bottle.

My favourite too, esp cold and - as you say - with lime

JamMakingWannaBe · 02/01/2026 01:09

I had a 0% Heineken at a pub lunch recently which was very nice.

I'd just recommend working your way through the 0% drinks section at your local supermarket until you find one you like.

Soft drinks - unless you invest in a soda stream - are not that much cheaper than cheapo low cal lager.
