low carb and NA end of day 'treat' ideas

I'm trying to cut down my drinking to two nights a week. I'm already only drinking 3 nights per week , at least most of the time. But over the years, with dc, I've developed this really strong habit of feeling I'm owed a reward for getting through the day! Just because it's endlessly busy and can be stressful. I know it helps some people if they have NA drinks for this but they all seem to be so sugary ... as is hot chocolate... and since having gestational diabetes in two pregnancies (worse in the second), while I don't do a proper low carb diet I try to keep carby carbs to a minimum.

I also try to avoid high fat snacks before bed as that messes with my sleep.

Not a fan of artificial sweeteners

I'm guessing that leaves pretty much nothing 😂 but I reckon if there is a genius solution someone on here might have it ... Thanks

T1 diabetic - I usually have a square of dark chocolate with sea salt - doesn’t affect my blood sugars. For beverages I go with sugar free cbd drink or sparkling water with cbd spray.

thanks @Seenoevil33 Can I ask, what effect does cbd have for you? Does it help you relax?

It really does help me relax - I also sleep well with it

What about a fresh fruit salad - pineapple, kiwi, a few strawberries , black grapes etc - as colourful as possible ?

FlippityFloppityFlump · 01/07/2025 19:48

A mini milk ice cream when it's warm. Maybe make a jug of lemon ice tea using decaff teabags if the caffeine stops you sleeping. I made one yesterday and really enjoyed it.

Some low carb baking? I currently have cookies in the oven.

70 to 85% dark chocolate maybe with some strawberries.

Cheese snacks - snacking pig are my favourite but there are other brands

A NA beer. I know of some low carb ones if you're interested (I can't remember the name of top of my head so will have to check if you are)

I frequently feel like I need a reward for getting through the day! I am a raging chocoholic but also find a couple of squares of v dark chocolate a reasonable reward without me requiring to eat the whole bar. I don’t really drink alcohol anymore but I do have an impressive herbal tea selection - probably not what you fancy if it’s hot where you are… Could you also think about non-comestible rewards, like a guilty pleasure tv show, bath, fancy skincare etc? I know that might sound a bit lame but it’s about reframing things - a glass of wine used to be my reward until I realised that actually once the buzz had worn off it made me feel yuk so wasn’t really the prize it once was. However festering in the bath with no one demanding things from me feels like quite a treat (yes I am Mrs Large).

You could have a good quality ice lolly - especially in this heat.

Or a really nice mocktail - a Virgin Mary if you like tomato juice and spice or Apple juice, mint, cucumber and sparkling water with lots of ice. Or an iced tea or coffee.

DH and I have started sitting in front of a Scandi noir with a bowl of berries in the evening. Bit indulgent but cheaper than wine.

aniloD · 02/07/2025 00:05

Solero lollies. Less than 100 cals. Less than £2 for 3 currently from Asda. Last a bit longer than many 'treats'.
They are my saviour when I just need something

Bird and Blend teas come in some delicious flavours.

staryellow · 02/07/2025 11:10

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I have ordered some cbd oil, which would be fantastic if it helped with sleep because I have such bad insomnia. two birds and all that ... Love the berries idea too and am going to check out those low cal ice lollies ... @FlippityFloppityFlump thank you I didn't know there were low carb NA beers out there ... I'll have a google 😊

Ice pops! I have suddenly rediscovered them after the hot weekend. Low cal, low carb, NA - and provide a drink, snack and crunch all in one!

And you can get 40 for £2.50 from Morrisons :)
