alternative drinks- dry january

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 11/01/2025 12:41

hi everyone, DP and I are doing dry january
normally we drink 1- 1.5 glasses of red wine most nights and 1 or 2 pints if we go out - very rarely
so its a habit that we'd like to break
suggestions please for things we can drink while watching TV in the evenings?

we like some of the AF beers but would like something different sometimes
we don't want tea, we already drink gallons of that
we really don't like sweet drinks
tried AF red wine at christmas and it was thin and vinegary
just tried AF gin (Gordons) but tasted chemically

so far we are finding it easy (after a week 😆) but not really noticing any benefits really!

any suggestion? TIA, am going out now and will check in later

I really like the seedlip drinks. Bit expensive but a nice alternative. Or tonic water with a dash of bitters.

TherealmrsT · 11/01/2025 12:47

I mainly drink AF IPA at home and zero Guinness out.
Also like the Pentire coastal Spritz, Captain Morgan "rum" with ginger ale (not any other rum types though) some of the fever tree flavoured tonics on their own.
Only zero wine I like is fizzy...Frexinet is my favourite as not as sweet as some of the others.

I’m doing the same and have had the Trip CBD cans this week. Peach & ginger is nice.

Grenoble124 · 11/01/2025 15:01

I love Nozeco the pink one. The white might suit you.

Heelworkhero · 11/01/2025 15:02

Can you have decaf tea or fruit teas in the evening?
Most drinks will be full of rubbish additives and likely high calorie.

stanleypops66 · 11/01/2025 15:34

I really like Trip. They all taste lovely. I put it in a wine glass with ice and add a bit of fruit (depending on the flavour).

Rowena191 · 11/01/2025 16:20

I don't drink much alcohol and some of my favourite alternatives are cloudy lemonade, ginger ale, and elderflower tonic. My husband likes fiery ginger beer.

thanks for all the suggestions everyone

this is the problem really- I don't really want more tea (fruit/herbal or decaff) as that's what I'm drinking all day and lots of the alternatives seem sweet

the seedlip drinks look interesting but expensive and I'm reluctant to take the risk after the gin dissappointment!

If you have the toogood to go app, they have seedlip in the delivery section. I have seen a box of 2bottles for £9.99 sold (should be £44.00)

I drink Trip and also little ricks.
AF Corona is nice too.

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 12/01/2025 11:41

thanks for that, I downloaded the app but they were sold out
maybe they will come up again
can you set up alerts do you know? it seems to be mostly Greggs pasties !

Yes you can get the app to send you notifications to check the app.
I check in the mornings and afternoons.

I haven't tried the delivery section yet but I do use it for collections of food.

I'll keep an eye for you too ☺️

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 12/01/2025 11:51

I'm tempted to get the Tony's chocolony box too as it's expensive to buy in shops unless on offer.

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 12/01/2025 11:57

it is expensive!!! but maybe no bad thing as that limits my consumption 😆

I’m having drinks that don’t try to taste like alcohol.

ive got a soda stream, so sparkling water with ice and lemon juice or a dash or fruit juice, cordial (squash), Lipton lemon iced tea. Or even a big glass of water with ice, lemon juice and frozen cucumber slices.

GogAndMagog · 12/01/2025 12:23

I have non alcoholic beer with a splash of lemonade. I enjoy that all year round to avoid drinking every day.

Or zero Guineas which is really lovely.

No alcohol sparking wine is nice too, either a slice of cucumber or lemon.

Turboislander · 12/01/2025 15:59

I cold brew green tea (usually the ones that have a fruit flavour -favourite is mango and lychee) and then fizz them up with the soda stream. Feels like a grown up drink but not too sweet

Theworldisfullofgs · 12/01/2025 16:04

I did not like botivo (expensive for not liking it as well). Tried it lots of different ways.
The martini vibrante is nice).

missionchub · 12/01/2025 16:09

Remedy brand - raspberry lemonade kombucha. I have it on an evening with lots of ice and it's not at all too sweet, crisp and tangy! Reminds me of a really dry cider.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 13/01/2025 22:20

@Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning the seedlips are back on TGTG!

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 14/01/2025 17:16

thanks for that @Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair I saw that last night and ordered some ! so we will see !

Fresh lemon slice and fancy sparkling water, or elderflower tonic

when in pub I go for a soda and lime.

MamaBobo · 14/01/2025 18:35

Fevertree Tonic and a dash or two of angostura bitters, twist of orange zest. Sparkling water (done in the sodastream) with cucumber or poured over some fresh mint and lemon muddled in the bottom of the glass. We also do herbal infusions chilled down in the fridge. We used to drink Seedlip but tbh we found that the angostura/tonic combo was just as nice. We’re off the AF beers at the moment because we are both really trying to lose weight and most are quite calorific. AF Guinness is lovely, Ghost Ship by Adnams is also really great.
