Bleeding and cirrhosis of liver

familyfuckyouup · 24/03/2024 09:04

I'm in my 50s and still having normal periods.
But this one won't stop. It's very light, dark blood and has been going on for at least a week.
I've read online it can be a sign or cirrhosis of liver.
Has anybody had any experience of this? Any knowledge of this?
I have alcohol dependency. I don't binge any more but usually have one drink a day. Rarely none, sometimes more. I have cut down a lot in recent years.

ring GP first thing tomorrow OP

you are right to be concerned but this may result in you getting some support with your addiction

TheNewDeer · 24/03/2024 09:06

because you’re going to need to stop. It looks like it is impacting organs

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 24/03/2024 09:13

Sounds more likely to be menopause-related

familyfuckyouup · 24/03/2024 09:16

That was my first thought @DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats
I couldn't find much information about it.
I will have another search.
My gums bleed too but less now that I brush them more softly.

Yeh it sounds like it’s the menopause starting. Periods get erratic etc. Make sure you take some iron tablets. See how you go x

AnnaMagnani · 24/03/2024 10:19

It's very much more likely to be a gynae related issue but either way, you need to see your GP.

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 24/03/2024 10:21

@AnnaMagnani Yes if the bleeding carries on make an appt to discuss with dr x

Small amounts of alcohol thin the blood (hence the “red wine is good for you trope”) but larger amounts/alcohol abuse tends to do the opposite ie cause blood clots. Alcohol is linked to peri dental disease /gum disease as it contains a lot of sugar which can trap bacteria in the gums and because people might not brush their teeth properly/at all if they are going to bed under the influence. Do you floss? If not, then start doing that - your gums will bleed like mad to begin with but after a few days, will settle down if gum disease is the problem.

Certainly a failing liver/cirrhosis can cause bleeding problems but it is unlikely that only bleeding gums when you brush would be the only symptom. If a failing liver was causing bleeding tendency you would almost certainly have other symptoms.

It is more likely that this is menopausal. Dark blood is usually a sign of “old” rather than fresh blood. So if it’s coming from your uterus, it’s likely to be “period” blood - slow flow such as at the end of your period /at menopause means the blood takes longer to leave the uterus and has time to oxidise which turns it brown.

It could be something more serious but it’s more likely menopause. If it gets worse, you get other symptoms or bleeding from elsewhere then you’d really need to see your doctor 💐❤️

Thanks everybody
I do floss a bit @Pippa246 but you're right, they bleed like mad! I also use a strong mouthwash. Don't do either enough though.
I don't have a dentist and will realistically have to go private.
Feel like I don't have a GP either but I do and I will go if it continues.
I think I probably panicked a bit but perhaps a wake up call to finally cut out the alcohol!

@familyfuckyouup - this is really good for gum problems- DH has a congenital gum/teeth problem that causes gums to recede and this is the only thing that helps stop swollen/bleeding gums. I use it when my gums are inflamed or when I get mouth ulcers which I’m prone to - brush with it but don’t rinse or you can smear on gums and leave for 5 mins.

Don’t buy it in Boots - much cheaper in home bargains/asda

Thanks @Pippa246
I use that in the morning and one for sensitive teeth at night.
I found using only the one above meant my teeth got sensitive but it is good for gums. No bleeding this morning and no alcohol last night!
