Massive health anxiety over liver damage

CrystalQueen87 · 05/01/2024 18:15

I had a routine Liver function test in mid October and it was all normal.
I went on a 3 week vacation in November and drank daily.
Then over the Christmas run up period had only a day or two break of drinking with Christmas parties, functions and Xmas break new year etc.
I have massive health anxiety and I'm so worried I've caused irreversible liver damage as I've been experiencing a twinge in my right sided back on and off and upper right side under my ribs.
I'm terrified I have damaged my liver.
If my Liver function test was normal 3 months ago is there any way I have cirrhosis now? Please help.

There is absolutely no chance. Even seasoned alcoholics can have a relatively normal liver function, it’s entirely dependent on the individual. But you’ve got no chance of going from normal to extreme liver damage within three weeks.

Very very unlikely.

I used to get the health anxiety and the back twinges and my liver is fine.
It takes a lot of drinking over many years for most people to get cirrhosis (dr said Id be worried if you were drinking a bottle of vodka a day for years). Do a detox and the hangxiety will go away.
Pay for a private scan if you are really worried after that- it will show you if there is any scarring.

You need psychological support. Seeking reassurance about irrational fears just feeds the health anxiety and keeps it going.

Three weeks, three months. Even three years. If your liver tests were normal then, there will be little change now.

Op i could have literally wrote your post. I agree with all your PP's though.

I drank nearly 11days straight over Xmas bar one day and I get twinges but I guess these could be many many things that are just normal bodily functions such as trapped blocks of wind or spasms.

I was even convinced my eyes were yellow at one point but no one could see it at all, If that's not severe health anxiety I don't know what is!.

Your test was normal so it's extremely likely you'll be fine. Just give your liver a holiday now and have a detox 😜.

Seriously you need help for your anxiety. Your liver will be fine, unless you forgot to mention that you drink 2 bottles of wine, every day

DillDanding · 05/01/2024 18:42

Your liver is probably just fine, you should try and get help for your anxiety.

Doteycat · 05/01/2024 18:52

You cannot do damage like that unless u are a seriously heavy drinker over a long period of time.
Binge drinking is never good but you won't have messed up your liver long term if ur results were normal 3 months ago.
I'm on bedrest after a liver infection. Trust me. If your liver results were off the charts you wouldn't have to go looking for symptoms.
But you do need to deal with your health anxiety. I've had it and it will wreck your head.

mindutopia · 05/01/2024 21:45

Your liver is absolutely fine. More than likely you have a bit of stomach or bowel irritation that’s causing you a bit of discomfort. I drank 3 bottles of wine day for about a year before I stopped drinking (and obviously drank heavily for nearly 20 years before that). My liver function tests were a bit higher than normal but no permanent damage (and they are picture perfect now).

Stopping or cutting down on drinking will always be good for your liver/stomach/bowels, but it also will have a huge impact on your anxiety too.

tribpot · 05/01/2024 21:51

Like everyone else has already said - there is literally no way you can have caused liver damage.

But

  1. It would be good for you to get some help for your health anxiety, as the stress of worrying about a non-issue is itself an issue
  2. You could aim to drink less when on holiday or at Christmas if you want to / if it would make you feel less anxious. Just because you haven't done your liver any permanent damage doesn't mean you've done it any favours either!

Thank you for the replies.
I am getting counselling for my Health anxiety.
I go through phases of worrying and obsessing over my liver so I was just trying to put things into perspective on how much and over how long it would take to do damage to the liver if your liver function tests are normal I suppose I should be happy with that.
