Heart palpitations after consuming alcohol

just wondered if anybody has experienced similar

I’ve always been a tolerant drinker. I don’t drink often. I will drink heavy if I go out with friends etc once in a blue moon or every other weekend or so I’ll have a couple of drinks at home watching tele with the hubby

in the past I’d say 2-3 years I’ve started to notice that when I consume alcohol even if it is the smallest amount I will really struggle going to sleep as I can feel my heart pounding. Sometimes once I have eventually managed to get to sleep I will wake up feeling quite unwell and be sick. I’ve avoided alcohol for over 2 months because of this and even considered stopping completely. Not because I don’t enjoy it but because how it makes me feel in the after math. It’s not a hangover it makes me feel genuinely unwell. Last night I decided just to have a drink as I really fancied one. I was sensible and had 2 fruit ciders, followed by a takeaway and I took a hot chocolate to bed. As soon as I tried to sleep the heart pounding started and I was so uncomfortable. It’s almost like my body has just started to reject alcohol! Today I have bought myself some zero Prosecco to enjoy on Xmas day as I really don’t want to feel poorly on Christmas! I’m feeling quite disheartened as I just want to enjoy the occasional tipple. I do not take drugs and I am on no other medication which would cause adverse reactions.

I would like to also state there is nothing wrong with my heart as I have had that checked over.

similar stories and advice appreciated

I'm exactly the same, heart races if I even have one drink. I was blaming it on having covid as seemed to start after that. I'm not a big drinker and don't drink often so maybe it's more obvious. Nothing wrong with my heart either as has it all checked when I had covid (it also gave me palpitations!). I'm contemplating not drinking at all. But I do, on occasions, really enjoy a drink!

Yep. It was the start of peri for me, and it’s why I don’t drink often now .

This happens to my mom, also she gets breathless, she is in her 60's though so not peri but maybe could still be linked to menopause

Google ‘holiday heart syndrome’ it used to affect me pre menopause but rarely now.

I get this with the smallest amount of wine but not with beer or gin (don’t drink anything else). Very disappointing. I also can’t drink coffee with caffeine anymore at all.

GingerLemonLime · 23/12/2023 22:25

Yes, I get this too, it’s horrible. It started a few years ago, with hindsight it was probably one of the first signs I had that I was perimenopausal.

swedex · 23/12/2023 22:47

And this is why I'm not getting to sleep! Similar here too every time I drink any wine I just cannot get to sleep and then have a truly bad nights sleep. Feels like my heart is racing but my Fitbit says my hr is normal.
I've really decreased my drinking and seriously considering stopping altogether as this is really shit! Sleep is everything!

I have a sulphite intolerance/allergy that I developed in my late 30s and it’s in a lot of alcohol and that’s how it presents for me. As well as heart racing my face starts to feel warm.

And just to add - cider is full of sulphites. It’s in wines, ciders and some beers mainly.

Me too! My face goes bright red and burns.

I believe you can get sulphite free wine, and spirits like vodka are said to be sulphite free.

I very rarely drink these days due to a racing heart after any alcohol.
it’s much worse since I became peri. I read that you’ll not sleep with a racing heartbeat for some reason.

also op, you did have a hot chocolate also which has lots of sugar and caffeine in it.
