Alcohol Free Drink Inspiration

I would love to see what alcohol free drinks you are all having, especially during the run up to Christmas. I prefer something refreshing but not too sweet.

Today I have a ginger beer with a really bad twist of orange peel, along with a squeeze of the orange, over ice. This ginger beer is quite peppery (but a little expensive for every day).

seedlip is the best! only need tonic and ice with it too

thesugarbumfairy · 01/12/2023 19:06

I worked my way through the no alcohol gin options in the pub on Wednesday (work do -free bar but was driving) and rather liked the Whitley Neil options - particularly the orange one. https://www.vipbottles.co.uk/product/whitley-neill-blood-orange-alcohol-free-gin-70cl/ with tonic and ice.

I've drunk a few chilled bottles of Lidl's Perlenbacher 0% lager tonight. I quite like it.
I have a bottle of co-op's white wine in the fridge for tomorrow night watching Strictly. I'll report back on my tasting notes then.
Looking forward to being hangover free tomorrow - we're going ice-skating!

Wildernesstips · 01/12/2023 19:14

@iffyi I love Seedlip, it almost feels savoury, but it is so pricey!

There is a page on Instagram, the mindful mocktail. She makes beautiful alcohol free drinks and shares the recipes.

What do you enjoy? Most AF drinks will always be cheaper than alcohol. Lately, I’ve been drinking a lot more darker AF beers - so an Adnam’s ghost ship AF or the Guinness 0.0.

I was never a big gin drinker, so in terms of ‘spirits’ I like the Fluere dark cane or smoked agave (tastes like a dark rum or a mezcal respectively).

If you just want a non sweet drink, just a nice tonic with lots of garnishes or I have the Martini floreale with tonic.

There are some nice de-alcoholised red wines (Waitrose has a good selection). Natureo 0.0 is nice and I think is like £6.50 a bottle. I can get usually 4-5 glasses out of that, which will last the best part of a week, so good value.

Wildernesstips · 02/12/2023 09:32

Red wine is my thing really, but the last time I tried AF wine I was disappointed so I have avoided it. But might try looking again in Waitrose.

I don't drink and never really have. I usually just have a coke or fruit juice when I go out. The other day I went with friends to a bar/minigolf place that did cocktails and mocktails. I've always thought of mocktails as basically just squash but after trying a couple I was very impressed. The flavours, textures, overall complexity and depth of the things surprised me in a good way.

WhamBamThankU · 03/12/2023 11:09

Have you tried mulled apple juice? Very similar to mulled cider.

Wildernesstips · 03/12/2023 18:28

@WhamBamThankU yes, I tried mulled apple juice a few weeks ago - it was very comforting and definitely needs to go in my rotation of AF drinks. I bought apple juice this week exactly for this purpose.

Really like the look of the Cranberry Basil Spritzer.

Yesterday I had a Lidl Mediterranean tonic water with olives and rosemary, and it was divine. I actually think if I had added a little of the olive juice it might have been even better!

The Schwartz mulled cider/mulled wine sachets are amazing to make a quick batch! Instead of red wine substitute for grape juice.

Ladyofthepond · 03/12/2023 22:47

Lidl have a v good alcohol free mulled wine in at the mo! Pop it in a pan or slow cooker with a load of fruit and is delicious. As for A/F beer I like Corona 0% because it's super light, if you're into something more hoppy then brewdog Hazy Jane is a great shout, and Guinness 0% is superb.

Peppermint81 · 03/12/2023 22:51

Appetiser - you cannot beat it for a refreshing sparkly drink!

Peppermint81 · 03/12/2023 22:51

Appletiser!

Candleabra · 03/12/2023 22:53

I like alcohol free mojitos - lots of lime and mint. Feels like a real treat

Popetthetreehugger · 03/12/2023 22:59

35 years ago I became a single mum to 3 under 5 , so I couldn’t drink as had to be on the ball . I’m telling you the time line as it’s such a dated drink 🤦‍♀️! If I had been able to drink , it would have been Pernod and orange… so I picked fennel plants and steeped them in fresh orange over night …. Honestly fab ( if you like your drinks straight from the 80s)

jelly79 · 03/12/2023 23:03

I've always been so disappointed with AF wine

I actually really like soda water with ice in a wine glass (always) with some fresh limes

Will try grapefruit juice, soda and some rosemary

Ginger beer

Ginger kombucha

All in a wine glass. Always.

If anyone has any AF red wine recommendations though 🙏

jelly79 · 03/12/2023 23:03

Peppermint81 · 03/12/2023 22:51

Appletiser!

Agree with this too.

In a wine glass :)

JobMatch3000 · 05/12/2023 20:58

I can confirm the Aldi 0% Chardonnay is vile. It's just gone down the sink.

JobMatch3000 · 06/12/2023 18:15

I'm trying the McGuigan 0% Sauvignon Blanc tonight. 100 times better than the Aldi pish I tried last night. It's quite tart which I like.

Wildernesstips · 06/12/2023 18:44

Thanks for letting us know about these @JobMatch3000 - I will seek out the Sauvignon as I also like a tarter wine.

I am taste testing in prep for Xmas / my AF future.
I tried the Eisberg SB (I bought it in CoOp but I saw it in Tesco's) last weekend. I think it was less sharp than the McGuigan.
I bought some berry Kombucha to try too.
I've also ordered some AF Kahlua/Tia Maria and some dark "rum" to make AF cocktails over Xmas. Apparently if you mix condensed milk into the AF Kahlua, it tastes like Bailey's!
I'm reading that Waitrose/Ocado have a good AF selection. We've only got a tiny Waitrose here but I'll try and pop in.
Kylie's AF fizzy rose is rated. I might try that next weekend.
