What to do about a drink driver

My niece has just called me and said her mum is off on one and has gone out in a temper in her car and is plastered. Apparently there was a big family row about her drinking. my BIL called her an alcoholic and he is also drunk but awake. My niece is 22 and has 2 younger siblings 16 and 17 all live at home.
My sister has form for drinking too much and probably is an alcoholic. There's no talking to her about it, she won't listen, shouts and gets defensive about it even when sober.
How can I help them?

Call the police and give them her registration number. Now.

freetheunicorn1 · 19/10/2023 21:06

Report to the police!

JimnJoyce · 19/10/2023 21:06

I know I should but it's my sister

Would you be saying but its my sister if she is involved in a tragic road accident !!!

Marblessolveeverything · 19/10/2023 21:12

Police now! If an innocent life is lost how will you live with yourself?

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 19/10/2023 21:12

Shop her to the police. I despise anyone who drinks then drives - I witnessed my brother get mown down by one, when I was 16. It devastated my whole family

To be blunt, which is better:
Your sister pulled over by the police for drink driving?
Your sister in prison for killing someone whilst drunk driving?
Your sister killed whilst drunk driving?

Call the police.

JVC24601 · 19/10/2023 21:12

And so surely you care about her safety?!

I’ve called for my partner. My best friend has called for his mum. It needs to be done.

For what it’s worth, in both of those cases, the police were very supportive and there was no arrest or prosecution.

Police. No question.

ermno3 · 19/10/2023 21:14

Recently I watched a horrible video of a drunk driver having a crash and killing the passenger. I'd report her.

StarDolphins · 19/10/2023 21:14

I would call the police, she could kill herself
or others.

This.

Drink drivers ruin people's lives.

And those of us whose lives are ruined are left to pick up the pieces.

Report her before she hurts herself or someone else.

It is one of the most selfish offences that is vastly under reported because people don't want to get their friend / family into trouble.

Better they get in trouble than cause harm to themselves or other people.

Exactly!

Call the police. She is currently a risk to life.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 19/10/2023 21:16

You know you have to call the police, it's the only answer. Now, before she kills someone.

JimnJoyce · 19/10/2023 21:43

Thanks all you've compounded what I was thinking even though I don't really want to do it.

You really need to do it asap OP. While she's likely to still be out driving ideally.

Lizzieregina · 19/10/2023 22:17

Yes police right away.

When my son was at university (about 19) a friend was getting into his car drunk and DS took out his phone and told him he’d call the police there and then if he started the car. He handed over his keys.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 19/10/2023 23:44

What happened? Did the police stop her?
