Daughter of functioning alcoholic here, My Father was hospitalised after needing a life-saving operation.
He is a shell of his former self, no quality of life whatsoever, hasn't been out of hospital for a Year, is unable to eat / drink and requires 24 hour care. Alcohol has destroyed all of our lives, feel like I've lost a Parent despite him still being alive. We tried everything to help him with his Alcohol problem, over 15 years of pleading - but the Whiskey always won.
Please, please reach out for support and help if you're struggling, think of your Friends / Family and their lives too Flowers

I’m so sorry. And yes, you’re right it’s entirely in the power of the individual to stop- not family or friends or health or work or mental health professionals.
No- one can stop drinking unless they realise that.

I’m so sorry OP. We were in a similar position a few months ago after my brother nearly died, but somehow he was medically fit to be discharged and now he’s back to drinking and hiding it. He’s disabled now and can’t walk unaided or work but still insists he’s never been an addict. It’s a miracle he pulled through but only a matter of time before he’s back in hospital or his heart stops. Sending love, it really does tear families apart x

I lost my lovely mum to alcohol too. Sending love to all. I barely drink now but one of my siblings can really put it away and it's a big worry Sad
