Raised ALT- so worried

Hi all,

I just got back from the drs and I asked about some blood tests I had done months ago. She said that my ALT was slightly raised, nothing she was worried about but it was 63, normal is 50 (not sure what system is used as I think it varies). She was completely unbothered. I know that I've been drinking too much the last 8ish months and I assume that is what has caused the raised ALT. If I cut right down, will my ALT go down to the normal range? I'm only early 20's so I don't want to give myself permanent damage. TIA.

What is ALT please? Sorry, didn't know the term.

You've got nothing to lose by reducing the alcohol. Whether the raised level is caused by it or not, there are other risks associated with alcohol consumption.

Give your body a break. At your age healing is normally good.

@SiobhanSharpe I believe it's alanine transaminase. Not entirely sure what it even means tbh.

Just talking to someone on another thread. There should be an AST level too I believe. I can't remember what mine was when I had fatty liver but it was around the 400 mark I think. Last I had it checked it was well back in the healthy range at about 37. So it will recover.

All I will say it I first started getting figures like yours when I was 25/26 it didn't take me long to get the high figure that lead to fatty liver (which is now reversed) I think I was 28 at the time. I was drinking too much then, I knew it but was in complete denial. I'm still fairly new to living AF and have slips but the last 3 years have been so much better I will say that.

@alco she didn't say anything about that, she wasn't bothered at all about the figure but I am obviously concerned. Can I ask how much you were drinking at the time? I decided to tot up my total as I've been in denial and it's bad Sad

We’re your other liver enzymes ok do you know? Your reading isn’t that high, cut back a bit and it should resolve fairly quickly.

I was drinking at least 1 bottle of wine per night. Often accompanied by a few gins. Then going out every Saturday night drinking idk how much
