Close pal died unexpectedly

I’ve just thought f it, if she can go so quickly what is the point in berating myself for drinking? She was healthy, died of sepsis, undiagnosed lupus. People seem to be dying younger these days, in 50s and 60s. I’m 50 this year, don’t know how long I’ve got left.

The coronavirus pandemic led to a greater number of deaths than normal in 2020. Consequently, in the latest estimates, we see virtually no improvement in life expectancy for females compared to 2015 to 2017 at 82.9 years, while for males life expectancy has fallen back to levels reported for 2012 to 2014, at 79 years
These seem to be the latest available figures, so you are not wrong regarding male death.

So surely you wantvthe life you DO have to becthe gestvit can possibly be? Does alcohol help you live your best life or foes prevent you livingvyour best life?

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend Flowers

Are you an alcoholic or problem drinker in other ways?

MarchMadness23 · 29/03/2023 23:00

I'm sorry to hear about your pal.

You need to give yourself some time to process it.

Drinking alcohol increases your risks of all kinds of illnesses. Not drinking doesn't guarantee you won't ever die or you'll die in your sleep from 'old age' in your 120th year.

Thats why cutting your own consumption is a good thing 🌷

APoppyLicks · 29/03/2023 23:04

I'm sorry you've had loss, but don't Intentionally shorten your life because of it. We can all die tomorrow, or the next day or in 50 years, but do you want to go down knowing you caused it?

Marchintospring · 29/03/2023 23:24

Sorry about your friend. It’s snipers alley 50-60.
I don’t know. I think “ not dying” is a stupid reason. a) we are all dying and b) no one would climb Everest or sail around the world etc if not dying was important.

However living is really important. Is drinking impinging on that? Do you feel crap in the mornings, look old before your time, put on weight, have people “ worry” about your drinking? There’s a time for everything and realising that time isn’t everyday or every week is a good thing.

Drinking yourself to death doesn't work like that and wouldn't be any fun at all

I don't think OP is suggesting that but I don't know any background.

OP I hope you're all right.

Thanks to all for your comments. Yes I have a bit of a drinking problem, a lot of it is boredom, feeling bored unfulfilled and frustrated. Bottle of vodka a week. I used to drink wine but, went on a low carb diet, found out wine was full of sugar so switched to vodka.

I think, well, ok 1 bottle of vodka a week is not bad considering I used to get through 4 bottles of wine a week, then I realized it’s probably the same amount of alcohol anyway?

I think you should address the boredome, etc. A bottle of vodka is not bad as drinking habits go, but does not beat having an interest in life.

EyesOnThePies · 30/03/2023 17:18

OP, I am really sorry about your friend.

I hope you can find ways to value and nurture your own life. You are worth it.

Yes that’s exactly right - I have lots of things which interest me that I want to do, but, I live in a small island and those things are just not possible here
