OP posts:

I read this naked mind by Annie grace and haven't had a drink since

Onewildandpreciouslife · 11/05/2022 19:11

Alcohol Explained by William Porter is often referred to as having this effect

Nouveaunew · 13/05/2022 21:34

I'm re-reading The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober. I'm on Day 12 alcohol-free so I can't say yet if it'll work or not but it's a good read anyhow.

Northernsoullover · 13/05/2022 21:38

Alcohol Lied to Me by Craig Beck or Alcohol Explained by William Porter. I've read them both but Craig Beck was first and I haven't drunk since..
Unexpected Joy is a great book but I'd say its a memoir rather than quit lit. It's good for passing the time when you don't drink anymore so I'd definitely recommend it too.

Me too!

LactoseTheIntolerant · 13/05/2022 21:48

Sorry that was supposed to include the quote about the Annie grace book, 'this naked mind'. Read it 3 years ago haven't had a drink since.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/05/2022 09:28

@LactoseTheIntolerant that's brilliant! It such a good book isn't it?

Yes it really is made me think about alcohol in a completely different way.

Nouveaunew · 14/05/2022 22:11

I used to listen to Annie Grace’s podcast regularly & i did her 30 day alcohol free experiment. I stayed off for 30 days but my love for wine was pretty strong so i ended up back on it. It works for SO many people though.

I had to reach the point where I just couldn’t keep sabotaging my health and nothing or no-one else could have got me there … I’ll still read to keep me going though and I know everyone’s different. Hopefully you’ll find what works for you @sarbar24 I also read another booze memoir The Sober Diaries. I rather those as I got all the science I needed from This Naked Mind podcast. Best of luck

For me a combination of these books:

The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, sparked my interest that there could be a fun life without drinking. But I didn't stop, and started to worry about my drinking.

I came on MN and found out about Alcohol Lied to Me - total game changer. I'm only six weeks in but no desire to have a drink!

I'd also recently read 'Shuggie Bain'; although a novel, it does show the brutal and sad effects of alcoholism

You can do it OP :)

Nouveaunew · 20/05/2022 22:46

Thanks @PurpleFresias My next read is going to be Alcohol Lied to me as there seem to be many recommendations in Alcohol Support for it. I’d not heard of Shuggie Bain - will check that out too

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/05/2022 23:10

@LactoseTheIntolerant me too. I just think it's a pointless poison now

HealthProbs · 23/05/2022 16:07

I'm 19 months AF and my light bulb moment book was The Sober Diaries by Clare Pooley

Wombat8 · 25/05/2022 06:34

9 weeks here after decades of heavy drinking. Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Drinking has sort of rewired my alcoholic brain and avoids the need for willpower which can leave you feeling deprived. Highly recommended. Alcohol Lied to Me by Craig Beck and like others have said The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober. Best wishes from Wombat

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 09/06/2022 17:56

@Wombat8

I'm reading that too. I'm only on the third instruction, but it;s really making me nod "yeah, that's right."

I always said that the usual approach (NHS stuff) was a bit of a sledgehammer, yes, I know it will kill me.... but not right this minute. But the Easyway book is a precision screwdriver making tiny changes. I always said you have to tweak my mind.

I don;t know how long I will manage. But the idea of saying "alcohol, I'm tired of your shit" is sounding quite good.

ShirleyJackson · 09/06/2022 18:03

This Naked Mind - two years sober in August.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 16/06/2022 14:13

Quick update from me on The Easyway - 10 days sober, including 2 visits to the pub. I had a brief moment of

"You could just have a......" Yeah...... Nah, can't be arsed.

But on the whole, I was fine. Long may it last.

Maisa45 · 17/06/2022 12:06

I've read most of the books listed on this thread and enjoyed them all but the one that spoke to me the most was Sober on a Drunk Planet.
