Red eyes/skin

Quick question- after quitting drinking, how long did it take for your eyes to whiten/lose red veins and your skin to start to look better? I really need some motivation to keep going and am feeling very insecure at the moment about the damage I have stupidly inflicted on myself through my wine habit :)

Anyone have any experience of this?

How long have you stopped drinking? I have asked this question before and it seems to take time for most people. I noticed after 3 weeks I finally saw some improvement and it was snail pace. But unfortunatley, I started drinking again. I do not drink that much or often (3-4 times a week half a bottle wine).....but I guess that is too much for me. I want to stop for 2-3 months and then perhaps drink once a week.

I read some people it took a couple months for skin to improve. Please keep us updated here, as it will help people in the future looking for the same motivation. It would be so much more helpful if we can see results the first week!

I think it can depend a lot on what your skin is like generally and how much you've been drinking/how badly it affects your skin. I have pretty bad skin (see username 😂) and alcohol really irritates it, so the redness starts to lessen within a week or so. However it isn't very noticeable when you see your own face every day so I don't think you see big changes for a good few weeks.

Might be worth taking a selfie once a week for a while to compare? That's what I'm planning on doing and hoping it will provide a bit of a moral boost Smile

I have only just decided to quit drinking after realising how anxious I have become and that my drinking is problematic. I also am feeling very insecure, particularly about my eyes, which have become quite red/veiny. I just don’t look healthy. I’m particularly interested in how long people saw to see an improvement in their eyes- how long before they were whiter/clearer? I know it sounds really superficial but I am going to find staying sober difficult so need some motivation. Plus I have several big social events coming up in early June which I would like to look better for, and I’m getting married myself next summer. I just don’t look or feel like myself at the moment and alcohol has a lot to do with that. I really want to be me again. Thanks for the replies so far :) It’s good to know I am not alone. I haven’t talked to anyone in real life about this as they have no idea how much/ frequently I drink and I’d rather it stay that way. Plus I don’t want to announce I am going AF only to fail!

I hear you! I am on day 6 and already my eyes look better. Last week when I looked in the mirror one morning, my eyes were so blood shot it was frightening.

I get twitchy every now and again but I'm doing it and feeling so much better honestly. Not sure if you've said how old you are but that can make a difference I think. I'm 60 now and could bounce back a lot quicker in my younger days. I do look better though - two people have commented on it!

Please feel free to chat on here if it helps at all. I know it does me when I get an urge for a drink.

Just realised that you weren't looking for support but to have a question answered!

That is very reassuring! I’m 35 and until about 6 months/a year ago looked young for my age (frequently IDed etc) but have aged suddenly and just don’t look healthy or feel attractive. I have been drinking too frequently and too much since my mid 20’s so I guess it’s not surprising but it has still been a real wake up call! I know I’m at an age now where I will start to age and that doesn’t bother me, but I do want to look and feel like myself/the best version of me. To be honest any motivation to quit is probably a good thing. I have realised that my mental health, anxiety levels and self esteem are all at rock bottom because of drinking. I need to find myself again and a way to just be. I just really miss feeling relaxed and calm without a glass in my hand.

It will take a few days, but you should start seeing benefits soon with appearance. Also, eating healthier helps the eyes to brighten. I once decided to skip dinner and woke the next day with brighter eyes. I noticed straight away. I also struggle with missing that feeling of relaxed calm when I have some wine...but only a short few hours later the anxiety starts in and lasts like 24-48 hours! SUCKS!
