Seeking inspiration

Hi there, this is my first time posting on mumsnet. I am really struggling with keeping sobriety under my belt and I am seeking some kind words of inspiration. I also suffer with poor mental health. I am attending AA meetings.

AA words or in general? You can do this. Keep it simple.

Do a gratitude list. Remember how utterly shit drinking is. It’s not release. It will plunge you back into hell.

I’m 5 years sober. ODAAT.

Thank you so much for your response. I attend AA meetings via zoom. You are right - it isn't a release. It just makes everything worse. Well done on your 5 years :) may I ask what ODAAT is please?

I think it's fantastic that you've reached out for support and I'm sorry that you're struggling with your mental health, do the AA meetings help with that?

Springflower99 · 24/03/2021 23:59

Hi rainbowninja,

Thank you. I suppose the AA meetings do a little, but I do struggle to share because of my anxiety I suppose. But overall it is helpful to hear others shares.

I feel when my mental health is poor, I drink to block it out, but i need to learn healthy ways of dealing with life.

Hi @Springflower99, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read your post. If there are things in your life that you are unhappy with or you're feeling anxious then addressing those things is really important too.

Have you tried any books on sobriety? I found “Alcohol Explained” a good book.

Amdone123 · 25/03/2021 07:43

Morning, op. Have you tried Annie Grace 30 day experiment? Google, if you haven't. That's worth a try. I'm in a similar position in that I can abstain, feel great, then get sucked back in. Lockdown does not make it easy.
I started a thread yesterday as am wanting to abstain for 10 days. Talking to others is the key for me. I have done abstention on my own before, but prefer help, advice, encouragement from others.

Springflower99 · 25/03/2021 11:42

I rang my gp today to speak through my problems surrounding why I drink.

Will order those books, as recommended.

I will read your thread amdone123.

Thank you everyone :)
