Alcoholic fiction

Does anyone have any recommendations for reading - fiction that features a woman struggling with alcohol. I don’t want to read Rachel’s Holiday, and the only other books I can think of are Girl on A Train and Eleanor Oliphant (I think) which I’ve read. I’ve got lots of non fiction but would like some fiction to help with my mindfulness while not drinking.

This charming man also by Marian Keynes but there's domestic violence in there too in case you haven't read it before.

I've just finished Nina is not Ok' by Shappi Khorsandi and really enjoyed it

Persephoned · 19/01/2021 20:19

Ah, thank you both! I think I’ll give both those a try - really like Shappi Khorsandi

Amanda prowse another love. I read it years ago and have never forgotten it. Very sad though.

Sharp Objects is a brilliant book.

I'm reading "the good house" by Ann Leary. Enjoying it but I'm only halfway through.

BravoWhiskey · 19/01/2021 20:43

The Outrun by Amy Liptrot is autobiographical rather than fiction but a really wonderful book

Persephoned · 21/01/2021 09:47

Thanks all - I’m off to browse the Waterstones website. @LunaNorth I like Roddy Doyle and Shuggie Bain sounds up my street too

Cold Shoulder by Lynda LaPlante is brilliant too. Dark crime solving thing though so possibly not your thing!

Persephoned · 22/01/2021 17:23

Oh I love crime fiction @Sparklfairy! Though Lynda LaPlante is someone I’ve never really read (like Prime Suspect tho!) so this could be a good way into her

I can add - The Empty Room by Lauren b Davis, the women in the window by aj Finn, ice and a slice and follow up the morning after the life before by della Galton. The female detective, carol jordan, in the Val mcdermid books develops an alcohol problem throughout the series, summer secrets, Jane green .
