Today I’m stopping drinking. I’ve stopped for a few weeks a number of times but I want to stop permanently. There’s a few Alan Carr books, but which is the best? Are his the best? Anything else I should be doing or looking at please? My DH won’t be stopping so I’m going solo. He won’t be unsupportive but will be drinking. Also, what do you drink instead? I like tonic in a fancy glass but what else? Thank you!

I read Allen Carr’s book ‘The Easy Way to Control Alcohol’ and ‘This Naked Mind’ by Annie Grace. Both really helped me. I have been teetotal for just over 8 months. My husband didn’t stop with me, but he cut back. Although he has started to drink a lot more now he is off for Christmas. 🙄

Thank you thermal I’ve ordered both books. And well done on your 8 months! That’s incredible.

No problem and good luck. Remember not to listen to that annoying repetitive voice telling you that one drink won’t hurt!🙂

I didn't try the Carr books but the unexpected joy of being sober by Catherine Gray, Alcohol Lied to me by Craig beck and the sober diaries by Clare Pooley worked for me. I've been dry since the beginning of October, which I know isn't long, but at that stage I couldn't remember ever having gone as much as a week without since starting drinking in my teens.

Best of luck, it's worth the struggle!!
