Has anyone else had success with Allen Carr?

I downloaded his audiobook and it is very boring and repetitive so I wished I was able to skip a lot of it - but i think it has helped in a way I thought nothing could ! I honestly didn’t think I’d ever give up my daily drinking without really struggling and it’s only been a week ! but so far I am no longer finding it hard to say no .

I hope it helps others too. I was probably drink half a bottle with sometimes a gin and tonic and I feel better without it.

I started reading it recently only a few pages it seems good ! I haven't had chance to read it again but I've heard so much success about it ! We're you drinking daily ! I need to stop badly xx

I will be so interested to hear if you find it changes you too. I literally find it easy to not drink when I would never have believed i could.
Yes I was drinking every day and often too much as I sleep much better already and am less anxious. I also minded the cost of wine , cider and spirits and felt quietly guilty. And was never able to say no even when I had resolved to beforehand

Hi yes me. I listened on audiobook too repetitively initially. I don't know how it works but it does. I am just over 6 weeks sober and for sure it was this book.

I’m so thrilled and I really think it’s striking how effective it is as I can’t believe it’s taken away my need to use will power which always let me down!
We have two half a bottles of wine left from a guest last night and normally I would have found that an excuse to ‘not waste’ the rest by having a drink but I really am not bothered and finding it easy still.

One thing I do disagree with is not being able to drink occasionally as I feel happily in control in a way I was less so before, and would rather still fit in and have one glass if with friends. I don’t see a problem with this as long as never tempted me back to not being able to say no easily !

How u doing with it all OP?

EveningLight · 13/09/2019 20:55

I still haven’t had a drink nor minded! Have you managed to read any more yet? For me It’s like it’s rewired my relationship to alcohol (or now lack of one- though I did fleetingly wish I could have some red wine tonight as it’s a weekend).

I think it helps I listen again when wake in the night but it’s so boring I usually only hear 5 mins. It’s weird I’m grateful to such a badly written book as I still haven’t listened to half of it but it does seem effective. I now want one to cut caffeine too and iPhone addiction !!

I feel much better without alcohol which surprises me as it had become normal. Less anxiety and better in the mornings.

I agree I didn't always take it all In, some bits really stuck with me, I listened to it regularly in the first couple of weeks.

I am now just over 7 weeks sober and I genuinely believe it's down to this book.

Titsywoo · 13/09/2019 21:32

I had far better luck with Jason Vales book - I think it's called Kick the Drink.

drillbittaylor · 13/09/2019 21:42

All the best, OP.

I used his EasyWay to stop smoking book which worked after several failed attempts using NRT.

Hope this book works for you

blissa1 · 13/09/2019 22:27

I am a daily drinker not much but everyday is too much for me I'd say I'm still at the bit where it says that everyone who thinks they don't have an issue is an alcoholic in denial 🤨 so I don't hav a lot of spare reading time so I downloaded the Audio version n starting again today chapter one I'm hoping it will go in better. I think I been scared aswell to completely quit too like I would love moderation but this book I know does not believe that also how are you relaxing now ? Or in the evenings when I'm watching a programme this is how I relax thinking what will I do now HmmConfused

EveningLight · 14/09/2019 02:04

blissa1 I would persevere with the audio as it might help take away your feeling that you miss it to relax . I found it really helpful as it takes away all the reasons I wanted to drink and it’s been about 20 days now and I haven’t yet noticed needing to fill it with something else .

rupertpenrymistress I’m so excited it worked for you too and I keep wanting to add a comment to every thread on the alcohol problem board in case helps others when I see them trying AA etc which must be much harder .

titsywoo thank you and I will remember that one in case every need to remind myself . As I decided to stop drinking for 3 months then only drink moderately or socially but I know the Allen Carr book is against that so I may stop completely if it then doesn’t go well!
