Not sure if this is the right place-how do you go about tracing your biological family?

Long story short my mum was adopted in 1957 and wasn't too bothered about looking into anything due to the story she was told by her (adoptive) mum. Over time and since the birth of my dd she has been thinking about it more. Last year though her mum (my granny) brought a file of old papers round that she was going to burn-including my mums original birth certificate-all with totally different info on it to what she had always been told.
She is now very interested in at least finding out some basic info about her birth mum-but would like me to start (she has no internet at home). We now have her birth mothers name. It also looks as though she may have been born in a mother and baby home type place (not left on a doorstep as she was told!)

So how and where do we start?
Just had a google and there are so many (mainly US) sites that charge. Am a bit wary of anything like that. Can anyone suggest where we could start please?

Hi, I was adopted in Scotland when I was a baby and 30 years later decided to look for my birth parents. Dont know if its different in England but in Scotland you can get your name put on the adopted register (birth parents can put their name on it too) and they match you up. I got in touch with a compny callled Birthlink who sent me out the forms to place myself on the register and when I did it came back with a match . . my birth mother had registered on it the year before!! Ive since met my birthmother, birthfather, half brother, half sister . . and am meeting my grandmother and other half sister next weekend! Get in touch with Birthlink . .they are a registered charity and were great, am sure if your in England they can point you in the right direction!
